Dash Point 1-19-20
I met my son at the dock and we started fishing at 10am. The weather report said 20% rain for Tacoma. I think it was all on the sound. Which means we got wet.
First cast I got a flounder or sole, whichever, but a young person asked for it so I gave it to them. The first squid I caught 2 doubles one right after another. Then it slowed down so I tried the camera and got one. It was on and off until I had to leave at 1pm. At one point I counted my son’s and he had 12, I had 13. The end he had 20 I had 17.
Tides Low 5:41 AM 6.3 feet High 11:45 AM 12.5 feet

Nice haul! You deserve it, you've certainly put in your time (enjoyed reading your reports) Those males look gigantic! Have you got a limit yet? Its a little tougher to limit in the daylight..... but a couple of my most memorable trips were late season in broad daylight early in the morning. Although I've limited most of the 6 or 7 late night boat squidding trips this year, I definitely miss squidding from the piers. Actually, the boat kinda messed up this year's squidding for me.... my freezer is full of squid, now I dont go squidding anymore.... Lol... maybe I should rethink this. The seals are much worse from a boat too. Every seal in the area hears dinner bells when they see a stationary boat with lights shining into the water. I lost more jigs this year than the last 5 years combined due to the damn seals (and bottom snags)

Sideburns I really don't want to fish at night. I have never got a limit. That is so many squid. My biggest was between 3-4 pounds (19). I was saying I needed to get another freezer for my squid. This is the best I have ever done. If you go to the same spot every time you get to know where the snags are. I lost 2 jigs the last time I went and a lot of braid. My son snagged on the the braid and got them back. The day before I got 5 jigs people lost. I noticed the snag is more prevalent at different tides. Squid challenge me...

Hey nice report Toni, how long would you expect decent squidding there? I'd like to try it before it's done.
Thanks for sharing

I don't know about the season.

January is usually still pretty good in the south sound, February is hit or miss. Heavy rain seems toi chase off the remaining squid. I have read that squid are very sensitive to salinity and the salinity of the puget sound probably goes way down with the heavy rains and high river flows. People do catch squid (fewer) all year though.

A few times ive seen every single person on the pier limit within an hour or two. Just got to be there when the mother load comes through. Seems like pier fishing the last few years Ive actually caught more jigs than I lost! Not the case when you are drifting around. I use 20-30 lb braid main line and 20-30lb mono to tie up leaders, no swivels. Couldnt believe I didnt get my jigs back the other day.... I was even pulling the boat around against the tide! I have been trying to use larger (weaker) hooks lately, straightening hooks back out is much less painful than replacing all two or three jigs! Three times now, Ive hooked a seal. (twice this year) The seal won three for three, and lost all of my line all the way to the mono backer twice

Well sideburns it sounds like squidding in the boat is hazardous. For you and seals. I think getting 10-20 a visit is a good number. 10 pounds would be overkill but exciting. I would have to buy a new freezer for sure and then quit before the end of the run. UNLESS I can find what else to do with them.

Lol! Lots of truth there! BTW.... If you find yourself with squid going bad in the freezer, they make the best crab bait!
