While I am living in Texas I try to get out during the few months that aren't hot. I went hiking with a friend to the Lost Maples State park here which has a fishing pond that's in a canyon and higher elevation than most of Texas. Though it's not exactly a mountain lake the water is cool still and fairly clear, and they plant trout in the winter. We saw trout feeding and jumping most of the day but only managed to catch one- on ham if you can believe it. They weren't biting spoons, spinners, powerbait or a fly that I tried. We also caught several bluegills with the meat as well.

I miss fishing in Texas. I used to spend my summers near Tyler Tx as a kid. I'd catch catfish, gar, crappie, perch, bluegill bass, -snakes and turtles (accidently) all out of farm ponds and creeks in the cow pastures. I dont believe I ever caught a trout though! (should have tried ham maybe) Thanks for the report.

They plant them in the winter in several lakes and ponds.
