Tough day on the Arm for me and my buddy Glenn. We only had one keeper eye in the boat after 3 1/2 hours of jig fishing. We finally decided to start trolling spinners in the main river channel above and below buoy 5. We eventually caught enough eaters (15); most were between 16-18 inches. Blade color changed depending on where we were with red/gold and silver blades producing best. The total catch of eyes was over 30 but half were dinks. With summer finally arriving and bringing along with it all of the water lice, wake boats and such, it is time to start targeting mud lines, especially those near points. We often catch eyes in as little as 3 FOW in the middle of the day during summer; all of that mud blocks the suns rays and the fish will move in shallow to feed. On Saturday we finished our day by doing just that and almost doubled the number of fish caught. It also produced the biggest eye of the day, 22 in., she was released. As usual we got to witness the comedy of errors by people attempting to launch at the Porky launch; always worth a chuckle or two.

Thanks for the detail. Are you casting stick baits up in the shallows when fishing that mudline ?

"Water lice" and ramp shenanigans are the two primary reasons I shy away from most summer fishing expeditions. Good you got to ice some 'eyes. ;-)

Seeing way more lice than usual on the RB for this time of year. Ugly but doesn't effect the meat. We couldn't get a Walleye bite on any of our usual spinner setups yesterday and then I switched to a small Rapala and we finally got a few.

Baldginger - We were not casting rapalas, we were just casting jigs shallow. I would imagine a guy/gal could cast a stickbait shallow and pickup some eyes. I also look for mudlines that are on top of weed beds; put those two together and the odds increase that walleyes will be nearby.

Noted. Thanks for sharing such detailed info and I will be on the lookout for some weedy mud lines near main lake points. Are you side imaging these fish or just fishing the scenario when it presents itself? Thanks again

My dad (88 years young) were out on Saturday. 30 fish in 5 hours. Biggest 25 inches 6 pounds. Saw the same things at the launch at Porcupine Bay. We jigged yellow jigs, red eye and chartreuse twister tail and 1/3 worm. Fish were aggressive. Only a few dinks. They were in the weeds for us. 12-20 feet. Thanks for the great details, as always. A huge help for those who can not get on the water as often as you. Tight lines. Packernut.

Bald - I am not using my side imaging, we have a few areas that we know produce this time of year. I also move around a lot looking for weed beds or laydowns that are in mudlines. The same thing applies to the main river; we look for mudlines, pull up and throw jigs for a few minutes and move on if no fish are active. I think most people would be surprised at how shallow walleyes are in the middle of the day. They chase bait fish into the weed beds and into the mudlines. I have caught them as shallow as 1 foot in the heat of the day. I hate to say this but we often wait for the water lice to create the mudlines for us.
