This report is for both 27 & 28 Sept.
27 Sep - Launched out of Porcupine Bay and headed over to a favorite weedbed. We were casting jigs into about 12-15 FOW and ripping them through the weeds. We caught a dozen or so eyes and put 4 eaters in the livewell. I also caught a nice 4 lb. smallie. Once the bite ended we motored up to a deep hole near buoy 1 and started out casting jigs in 60-70 FOW. This is one of my favorite fall/winter holes and it was full of dinks, 10-12 inchers. We were using a black 3/8 oz. jig head with a 3 inch ripple tail perch colored swinmbait. Many of the eyes were coughing up 3 inch perch so match the hatch as they say. We were picking up a few but it was a little slow so I switched to a perch colored jigging rap. I have never really used one before so I thought what the heck. I caught an eye on my next 12 casts and was 18 out of 20 at one point. I am now convinced that the fall means using a jigging rap as the way to go. A reaction bait definitely was the ticket but I also caught a few drop shotting that same swimbait. We did troll spinners a little in the area bellow buoy 5 and caught 16 eyes, kept 4. All told we boated at least 60 eyes; enough that my forearm was actually cramping.
28 Sep - Same as above almost. We boated about 20 eyes from the weedbed but only kept one. I caught another 4 lb. smallie. Motored up to the same deep hole, used the same baits and boated almost as many eyes. The trolling was much slower, we only boated 4 dinks. 50+ eyes on the day. Kept 8.
