Marine Area 11, Des Moines Pier, 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.,m. Tried salmon fishing, Coho hopefully. For hours threw 3/4 oz. to 1 1/2 oz. spoons and Wilson darts various colors. Other than an occasional tiny thing, nothing. Very windy most of the day until about 5 or 6 p.m. was very windy. Not sure about exact time, but, maybe about 5 or 6 p.m. the squid bite was on. Since I'm new at this pier fishing I don't know how it all works. But, about 5 or 6 p.m. the relatively empty pier filled up with people squid fishing. Us salmon fisherpeople were the minority. Saw one fellow somehow manage to bring in, and toss back, a very large Red Crab. No, I didn't take any pictures. I've been out to this pier 3 times in the last 10 days and no luck (or skill) catching anything of keeping size. Most fish I caught were just a little bit bigger than the spoon I was using. Also, if you do go out there, do not fish at the bottom. I've lost several hundred yards of line and 50 bucks worth of spoons and Wilson darts-some close to the pier, others about 30 yards from pier (I'm lousy at gauging distance).
Now, have fun... and go fish - somewhere that you can actually catch something.
