Sammamish has been tough lately. A fish here and a fish there. Mostly skinny cutties in the 15"+/- range. Water temp has been cold and fish have generally been sluggish and reluctant to bite. Thats my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

The fish gods finally smiled on us. Tuesday, catching was good. Put some nice fish in the box. Definitely still not what I would call red hot. The good news is the smolt released from the hatchery are starting to appear at the mouth of Issaquah Creek and the water temp has risen to 50 degrees +/-. Fishing should definitely improve in the next week or so.

What worked today was a little outside the box. Tandem Flashyfish/Dick Nite spoons with a piece of shrimp, 20 inch leader behind a flasher. 100-150 back and about 20 feet down on the rigger, 1.75 mph. Off the mouth of Issaquah Creek. I think anything resembling a smolt should work in the next couple weeks, Flashyfish, Dick Nites, Needlefish or whatever ya got. Just my opinion. Just because it worked today is no guarantee it will work tomorrow.

Tight lines
Randy

Thanks Randy, great report! Hoping to hit Sammamish in the next week or so, just wish it were a little closer to Olympia. Hey just a question: if you park in the launch area but don't actually use the ramp for launching do you know if you are required to pay a launch fee there? I have a cartopper that I don't trailer and can launch by hand but I don't know if I'm required to pay the launch fee there. Thanks!

I really dont know but the launch fee is only $7 so its not a bank breaker like some others. To me its worth paying to be able to launch in a nice facility safe secure area.

I don't want to see you get a ticket on a technicality, so you should pay the fee, because you are launching a craft without a trailer you can get ticketed. Also make sure you have all the required permits to use and park.

If you're not coming till after May 5th and don't mind the 200yrd haul, you can go to the State Park just to the South (actually closer to the Freeway than the launch) and launch from either Tibbets or Sunset beach without a launch fee.

You'll need a Discover Pass to park at either the State Park or the Boat Launch so keep that in mind.

I’ve seen your “little out of the box” thinking pay off many times and has made a slow day of fishing turn good. Great report as usual!

There would probably but more cutties if people didn't keep all of them.

There are tons of cutthroat in the lake. More than people think. Fishing can be a bit tricky at times but not because of lack of fish.

I would agree, but the south end is super slow and I have only seen one riser a day the past 4 trips. Just don’t seem to be in the area right now.

You are a grown man maybe reflect on why you clearly feel shame killing native fish stocks that won’t recover. If you think the stocks are doing well explain why

Hmm.... I guess there would technically be more fish in the lake if less were kept. Lol. Thanks for pointing that out. I wonder if that works for all lakes?

Nice to see someone get in to them....past two weeks have been so far the opposite of the norm for me. I did see Smolt last weekend but only in one area and not far from the launch. About 3 boat lengths of them and that was it far from the normal release. This weekend I did not see them but there were boats looking for them based on your report. Lots of perch around and full of eggs. I only got one fish all weekend trolling a Crankbait, going fast out towards Greenwood point. Hope it picks back up as it’s been stellar from Oct up until last weekend. Do you have a Maroon stripe on your boat?

No maroon stripe. Just a well traveled Customweld, blk canopy, blue Yamaha power. I really think it should pick up in the next couple weeks. Judging by past reports, from the end of Jan thru the middle of April have been slow Sammamish months for me and this year has been no exception. A fish here and a fish there. May has been gangbusters. See what happens.

Maybe in your next post you can show photos of the fish in the water being released and not yourself smiling for attention while you kill something beautiful?

Chinook->Coho->Steelhead->Cutthroat soon all the natives will be gone when you just believe the WDFW on appropriate fishing limits and pretend the great lakes and rivers produce infinite resources...
