Been awhile since I have been able to fish, and even longer since I've been on the board. It feels good to be back to both. I wanted to give American lake a go, Pierce county. Got on the lake a little later than I had hoped, at about 7:30 am. Absolutely beautiful with calm winds and glassy water. Motored over to the west side of Silcox island. The surface temperature was 75.6 degrees, so I decided to put the down riggers to work, thinking the fish would probably be looking for cooler water. Marking a thermocline at 30 ft, I sent one of Wannafishes lures tipped with a small chunk of nightcrawler behind a 50/50 dodger down to 33 ft. Set the speed to 1.5 and began the troll heading north toward the public launch. Soon I was delighted to see the rod dip hard and immediately spring back up, then take another hard dive and begin the bounce that signals a good fish with plenty of fight. Not disappointing, the fish was ready for battle. Taking long, line stripping runs and deep dives, then shooting to the surface for some spectacular aerial displays. When finally to the net I was very pleasantly surprised to see, not a big rainbow, but a chrome bright sea run cutt. I've seen where they are supposed to be in American, but in all my years fishing this lake, this is a first for me. Very happy to see such a beautiful fish.

Good to see you on again. Those native cutts are great eating, too.

New rainbow (the jaw doesn't extend past the eye to be a Cutt), though I don't know which Hatchery planted it in May- https://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/reports/stocking/trout-plants/all?lake_stocked=AMERICAN+LK+%28PIER%29&county=Pierce&species=&hatchery=®ion=&items_per_page=25

I have caught similar (slender with lighter spots) in same lake, they do put up quite a fight for their size. They do get in the way of the targeted fish.... 32-36 seems to be the choice depth, shallows haven't warmed much yet. Glad you are back fishing!! Gary

I gave you the wrong link, sorry. I haven't caught a Cutt there in over a year- notice the jaw here: http://www.northwestfishingreports.com/Reports/Details/37242 Gary
