Could have been a five star review but unfortunate events led to otherwise. Haven't been able to take the boat out since the Area 9 opening weekend. We got a late start so we decided to stick around the oil docks. Absolutely zero action around the tide change, and the weather was horrible too. There is a call on the radio about orcas in the vicinity, so keep an eye out for them. Realized my second downrigger had a broken terminal clip. First trip with the mooching rod and reel meant I wasn't 100% sure on how to set it up, and I got it birdsnested. I neglected to fully clear the birdsnest, assuming the knot would just pass through the eyelids. Towards the end of the day caught two shakers trolling north. Sped up from 2.5 to 3.5 knots and within seconds of doing so have the most massive take I have ever seen fishing the puget sound. Whatever it was ripped more line than fish I have caught offshore at Vancouver island. At least 200yds gone in 10 seconds. Then a massive snap. The fish, spoon, flasher, and all the line past the tangle are gone. I am extremely upset about this and I am going to be for quite some time. There is just no way that was a snag, I was in at least 100ft of water with my downrigger at 40. If it wasn't a fish it was a Porpoise or seal and the fact that a marine mammal is now swimming around tangled in my fishing gear makes me feel even worse than I would feel about loosing a fish.
