A few friends and I went down for the annual Brewster sockeye derby. Better known as combat fishing, roller derby, figure eight racing, and the Indianapolis 500 rolled up into one.
We are all chasing the bright sockeye salmon with ruby red flesh that are very plentiful this year. It takes about eight hours to adjust speed control, depth control, habits and tendencies of other boaters and fish all at the same time. But oh what fun it was.
We made some new friends caught plenty of fish and lost a little bit of gear from the long line troller’s with 200 feet of braid out behind their boats.
These Sockeye are showing signs of their long journey up the Columbia River but they are still feisty. They are located up and down throughout the water column but only bite in a narrow range. Our second day we dialed in that range and speed and it was game on. We finished our second day about 11 AM. with limits in the boat and headed home.
