Stayed in Moutcha Bay roughing it in tents. Not really roughing it, there is power and water at each site. Fished 6 days. 4 of those days were about 12 hours from leaving to returning. Caught fish every day and at all the usual spots. Forgive me if I get some of the areas names wrong. Hoias point in 4 mornings brought in 3 chinook(or as the locals call it a springer, our biggest at 15 lbs), Burdwood in the afternoons was good for a couple nice coho and another chinook, the lighthouse and maquinna pt to lighthouse was good for 5/6 coho and a couple kings. The last morning we fished the wall because a neighboring camper had limited on kings by 830 am the day before. We had a double on withing 15 minutes (netted one). Not another bite we noticed; checked the anchovy and had missed a bite, it was mangled. Our friends boat caught a 25 pound springer and that was all along with a few hits. All the normal spots would hit at some time, but the best bite was first light and the high slack in the late afternoon/evening. We fished the ammo dump area for lings and bottom fish. We left the dock around 5am every morning and back 5-6pm. Long days. After 6 days we ended up with our 8 coho, 8 chinook, 11 lingcod and 10 bottomfish. The biggest ling we caught was 18 lbs and we had a 17 also. only a few were around 10lbs and the rest were 10-15. Had several coho that were 8lbs. Best lure was a Blue Magic Brad's mini cut plug 3.0. A white coho killer picked up a few silvers and after about 2 dozen shaker kings, we put it away for the rest of the trip (on the 2nd day). A anchovy (mid sized) in a herring helmet was responsible the biggest king and a few others along with some coho. If only one lure could be used it would be the mini cut plug on this trip. Weather and wind allowed two easy days out for bottom fishing, one day we shouldn't have even tried going out in and a doable day. Good trip, it's always more fun when enough keepers bite, you can be selective and throw back. Not this trip, if it was legal it was bonked and in the fish box. We did let a lingcod go that was much bigger than the 17 lb we kept that day. Try to release the big females, plus the larger lings can be wormy. Our 18 pound had one worm by the tail end of the fillet. It was a good thing we showed up with our anchovies already bought, since the resort had none for sale. Critter cove on the 5th day had some (we swung in for a lunch of clam chowder, our only "short" day). No matter the spot we mostly fished 30-40 foot down on the down rigger.
