It was a cold and miserable day. Glenn launched out of Ft Spokane and we headed out to the main Columbia River. We spent a lot of time near outhouse flats and across from 7 Bays. Early on Glenn was having success with a blade bait and I was picking up some eyes using a hyper rattle. We were both using the same colors, chartreuse with orange highlights. When that bite died we switched to jigs. We both had the best success with a black jig head but Glenn was using an avocado red flake swimbait and I was using a chartreuse grub with gold flakes. 3/4 of the eyes were just weight when we picked up our baits off the bottom. The others actually were classic walleye tics. We caught 25 eyes and cleaned 24. We also caught 8 small burbot and released them all. We worked everything slow and would often let our lures sit for a few seconds before jigging them. We also caught a few by doing a random fast jig that got a couple of followers to hit. Wet and miserable but our expensive 100 mph gortex kept us dry.

Way to be a diehard and weather the deluge Mark and nice catch. Did you find any fish any shallower this trip or about the same? Thanks for the report...

Jedi, we caught everything between 40' and 60' today. Glenn said we were nuts for being out there today. I said we were committed. By the end of the day we probably should have been committed.

Should have been committed as nuts for sure. I find that if you are agreeable and don't start trouble they will turn you loose after a bit. Works for me. You cleaned 24 eyes that's what counts. Wish I'd been that nuts.

Part-time it is going to take a few days for everything to dry out. Our gloves were the weakest point of failure today. I was just glad I didn't fillet one of my fingers off as I definitely couldn't feel my left hand as we cleaned our eyes. I sliced off a knuckle about 10 years ago under the same conditions. I thought all of the blood was from the fish I was cleaning. That hurt once my hand warmed up. Took months to fill that knuckle back in.

Yep, I hear you. I only had 6 trout/salmon to do and I was plenty numb when I finished them. I use Buck knives that have the "gutting" edge near the top front, Have stoned them down flat after I added my own blood to the mess a few times. Hate to clean/fillet fish at home but when it's that cold I really have to talk to myself to get started.

"It was a cold and miserable day."

I spent many of "those days" on Commencement Bay cod fishing or in a duck blind during my teens. I don't miss "those" days at all. My wife would have me commited if I suggested fishing in weather like that, and that's with a full canvas enclosure and a Planar heater! :-D
