3 weeks after opening day me and my girlfriend decided to go up to Spencer and give it a try after being bored of small hatchery fish. After launching we headed up the lake toward the bar and pulled into the small bay just before it.
We pulled out the maggots and homemade double bladed wedding rings and tossed it in, cut the motor and slowly drifted. In about 20 seconds I had a nice healthy 14 incher in the boat. As I'm baiting back up and still just drifting my girlfriend hooks a nice chunky 12 incher. 2 fish in 2 minutes is a pretty good sign of an excellent day of fishing. So we kicked it into trolling mode with smiles on our faces.

Fishing in about 30 to 60 feet of water, at a temp of 60 degrees we thought the bigger fish were a bit deeper but most of the fish were concentrated in the first 10 feet or so.
This lake is absolutely excellent for early and very late season trout fishing. The first day we hooked and released 38 rainbows, most of which were 12 inches or bigger and a few around the 8-10 inch range but very healthy "slam your pole" chunky fighters. Gotta keep your hand on the pole at this lake.
The best combinations of colors and lures I noticed over the week or so of fishing Spencer pushed me to make a few custom lures. The best of these was a #7 hook with 4 medium green beads a mini bronze spinner another bead and another bronze spinner to top it off. Hook size REALLY didn't matter at all, these fish were psycho. This lure produced the most consistent big catches including a beautiful 17 incher that topped my 4th day. But not far behind were a woolybugger fly spinner tipped with a maggot, an F5 white with black spotted yellow flattfish, small green or yellow hotshot or mini silver shad rapalla all landed consistent 12 inchers.

Time didn't really make any difference though more fish broke the surface during the morning and evening hours like you would expect.

So if you feel the need for constant "SLAMMING" action and nice fish to boot or just want to take the kids out to prove to them that you really do know what you are doing, Spencer Lake will make you a star!!!.
