Sunday 09/14/03: Arrived at the lake at 1:30pm. Was bringing my mother-in-law to experience fly fishing for her first time. The lake was very placid and the weather couldn't have been better. Only a couple people fishing from shore (trespassing on YMCA property I might add; please respect private property) and another couple in a boat in the little pond to the north. I started out by trolling in our row boat over around the front of Camp Reed (camp is on the southwest corner) with a carey special variant (using white mallard vs yellow), my mother-in-law was trolling a worm. We stopped at the northwest corner and saw a few baby bass swimming around. I proceeded to fly fish after tying on a black woolly bugger. My MIL (mother-in-law) caught a couple rather small perch off the worm. I decided to row into the smaller extension to the north keeping after changing to a damsel fly nymph, my MIL changed to the fly rod with a black woolly bugger. The pond had only 1 rise but !
no bites so we rowed out. My MIL caught a 4" bass on the woolly bugger in the straight between the smaller pond on the rest of the lake. She threw him back in against my wishes as I like trout ponds to stay trout ponds. I rowed out into the deeper areas and hooked a nice 13" rainbow on the damsel fly about 4:15 on the northeast end just sound of the channel as you get into the drop off. Normally I catch & release but my MIL decided to keep the fish to eat. That was to be the only fish we caught all day. The fish started topping at about 4:30pm in the northern half of the lake but never bit either of our lines. Had tried both regular carey specials, a brown wolly worm, the damsel fly, and couple other variants I had. We left at 5:15 when the feeding was probably better but we had to get back home for dinner. bakerct78 @ yahoo . com
