I returned to Frater to see about those Cutthroat that are supposed to reside there. Again, I tried my favorite for this time of year, Green Wolly Bugger trailing a Prince Nymph. I fished the deep end and had a hard hit within 15 mins. I hooked up and at first played it for about a minute. Sad to say whatever it was freed itself. I was to find out what it was in about 1 hour. I fished waterboatmen and some other wet flies with no success (just a couple "bumps") and went back to the wolly/prince combo. As I paddled past the same area I had the earlier hit I felt my line stop dead. I thought I snagged something. As I put a little more tension on the line it slowly moved up, like a branch or BIG clump of weeds. I thought "heck, I'm losing these flies and leader to a big snag" Was I wrong! After I tried to move whatever it was up a bit the line suddenly became animated and erratic. I had a good sized fish on! After about 10 minutes, I had played it enough I thought I could bring !
up for a look. It was a nice, big Cutthroat! I landed it and it measured 14" and FAT! The sad thing is it had a fresh, open wound, about an inch long in it's belly, clear through to it's inner cavity. I figure that it might have been the same fish I hooked and lost earlier that day. Well, I'm convinced he wasn't the only one in there though so I took comfort in that. Sad to have that happen to such a nice fish. It was beautifully adorned in it's fall colors, and was healthy except for the big gash in it's belly) and full of fight. A very beautiful fish. Good Luck to All!
