My son and I launched our boat at about 6:30pm and headed out to one of our favorite spots towards the north end. The forecast was cloudy with a chance of showers and about 60-65 degrees. Days like these are nice here because the boaters and jet skiers are no where to be found (the summer months here can get pretty packed with boaters and personal watercrafts, especially the weekends). We trolled pop gear with a night crawler. We began getting periodic strikes after only about 15 minutes or so until about 7:30pm when the fun began. The strikes were plenty and by 8:15pm we had 4 keepers (rainbow and kokanee) measuring 12"-14", had released 3, and after playing them for as long as they'd let us, we lost 2 right near the boat. Fishing Cavanaugh, I've found, is best during the weekday mornings or evenings beginning in May and on into October. This beautiful lake has snow capped mountains in the east and breathtaking sunrises and sunsets in the west. With over 800 acres of cold, clean, clear water that reaches depths of up to 70-80 feet to play on, you are guaranteed a good time. Besides rainbows and kokanee I've heard that there are some pretty big bass being caught there too. The only drawback to fishing there is that there is no public access anywhere around the lake except for the boat launch. But if you just want to go fishing and have a boat, I would definitely recommend Lake Cavanaugh.
