Arrived at the lake approx 10:45 AM noticing only 2 other boats on the lake. Decided to troll a green carey special on a sinking line down to the other end of the lake. On my last trip to the lake about a month ago, wind drifting this fly had some good success, so as the saying goes, can't argue with success.
As I entered the larger portion of the lake, hooked up with a scrappy rainbow about 15 inches getting him along side the boat before he shook the hook. I was now anticipating a good day of fishing. I continued to troll for the next 2 hours without as much as a strike and my once high expectations had definitely waned. Electing to change my fly while stripping the carey in, BANG, a nice bow about 15 inches. Anticipation was once again soaring. Tried this tactic for the next hour without as much as a strike and decided that we needed to change the fly again. For the next 1 1/2 hours tried various flies and tactics without any results so elected to switch once again to a yellow carey special and troll it back to the boat launch. As I started to BRISKLY row back towards the boat launch, I hooked up with a nice bow approx 14 inches so I decided to try to briskly troll this fly a bit longer, and in the next hour caught 4 more fish. Decided to call it quits about 4:00 PM and headed in to the boat launch getting a few more strikes but not until I was within 30 yds of the launch did the last fish finally take the fly. All total, caught 7 rainbows which were between 13-15 1/2 inches.
