We are pretty good about checking our gear regularly. If the attitude of the rod tip changes in the slightest bit we reel them in and check our gear. I've marked pretty solid groups of fish at 50' to 100'. 8 ozs of wieght isn't going to get me anywhere near that, especially with a flasher.
