just wondering what kind of rods everyone uses? i fish all gloomis's and can honestly say that they are very overpriced and i could probably easily get away with fishing cheaper rods but i just cant bring myself to do it.

I have had one GLoomis in my lifetime, broke it easier than anything I have ever fished with. Got to a point I was almost scared to looked at it without it breaking.

Been using Lamiglas for several years with no issues...until the other day. Broke the tip off my spinning rod.

Never purchased anything Loomis...I've tinkered with the idea of having one nice setup, but for some $200-$250 bucks, I can 2 pretty darn nice setups with $50-$60 Shimano reels on both and I can usually find a good deal on a mid priced rod in the range of $40-$60 bucks...

Rods I have?
Shimano
Lamiglas
Shakespeare (Intrepid model? It's a darn nice rod and I haven't found a nice Shakespeare rod since. It's actually a UL rod, often used for trout, but I'll throw small blue foxes and similar spinners along rock banks for small bass. Works just great because of it's whip. I picked it up in Wenatchee at a Walmart I think for like $30? Feels and has been as durable as a $100 rod. I think it was mispriced)

NorthXNorthwest (sweet rod, check the review section for my entry on it. NorthXNorthwest are rods often made by big name companies specifically for Joes. Just a different name, cheaper, but it's the same rod with a few different cosmetic features)

Do not buy Okuma's...I'm sorry if this offends anyone or gets them riled up, but I'll never buy an Okuma product again. I worked in a fishing department and I can't tell you how many Okuma rods and reels we got back....I've snapped both Okuma rods I've purchased (only two rods I've snapped), and have since been buying a lot of Shimano and NorthXNorthwest rods since...

Send it back to Loomis with $50 and they'll send you a brand new one...

I have a little Oku trout rod it is cool it has caught hundreds of fish many over 2 pounds

I must have got lucky

I sent it down to Woodland with the mother-in-law...

Got me a replacement rod. Then it broke again, got another one...then sold it for $150 on craigslist. Haven't bought another.

I figure I can get skunked just as easy with a Loomis as anything else...just feels a touch better when I spend less.

Take a look at Rogue Rods. They are the most sensitive rods I have used. I bought one to start with, and loved it so much I sold all of my G Loomis GLX's. Now I have 7 Rogue's. Their Mag Bass series is outstanding. You will not be disappointed.

Loomis has Lamiglas beat in sensitivity and weight, no doubt about that. I've never had much problems with my Loomis rods. I also own Lamiglas, quantum, and Ordella.

I roll with Loomis. Weight, sensitivity, durability, and warranty are things I like about them. I dont think wallmart sells a bass specific rod. Gl2's and gl3's are just as affordable as and quantum or lami. I like that they make rods specific to types of fishing.

Also A Loomis user. Started with GL3's and managed to break a few. Back then though it was $20.00 and you got a new one. I have used them for about 7 years and could not be happier. Yes, I have heard of some breaking, but that is the price you pay for the sensitivity and low rod weight. Expensive (GLX) .. yes, worth it... that's up to you. I don't see myself changing. The Bronzeback GLX 822 is fabulous for light plactics and dropshotting.

I've got a couple of 6 foot Okuma ultralight spinning rods that I like a lot. I call them "buggywhips" because they flex so much. They are perfect for throwing very light lures, but I've got to really pop them to get a good hook set. They also suck big-time when used with a jerk bait. I've got a stiff Daiwa ultralight that I use to throw those little floating rapalas. It's at least 25 years old and still going strong. I don't think anyone makes ultralight rods that stiff anymore...

Personally, I think the length and action of a rod are much bigger factors than the brand -- especially when it comes to baitcasters. If you're trying to throw a small crankbait with a 6 foot heavy action rod, casting distance will be pitiful and backlashes will be plentiful. Been there, done that!

I have never bought a loomis rod but I won one, a custom one at that. Although it is a GL2 blank, I did have lower expectations since it was a "GL2." I was pleasantly surprised at how sensitive it was for a "low end" Loomis. It's on par with my competitor.

With this said, I don't plan to buy any Loomis soon. No need to.

Rods I use for bass fishing come from:
Lamiglas (Cert. Pro, Competitor)
Shimano (Crucial, Compre, Clarus)
Loomis (GL2)

I also have rods from
Berkley (Cherrywood and Lightning)
Tica TC4
Daiwa

Sensitivity is relative. What is sensitive in one angler's hands might feel like crap in anothers. Heck, even an Ugly Stik is sensitive in my hands.

I too have a Berkley Lightning Rod...works pretty well.

I agree. The only thing I can nit pick about it is that is a bit on the heavy side, but I'm not a weight weenie anyway.:farao:

I use pretty much all Loomis rods now. I really like the way they work for each specific task (spinnerbaits, crankbaits, jerkbaits, swimbaits, senkos, etc...). Also the 7'2" GLX Senko rod doubles as an awesome football head rod (baitcasting for 1/2 oz. and above or spinning for the lighter jigs). I also love how light the GLX rods are. I just loaned a buddy a couple of pitching/ flipping rods to try and he was super impressed with them.

I had GL rods before but as stated here they broke

Me too. I have a 7' light action spinning rod I use for UL fishing and I have caught 3 lb bass with it on 6# mono. It is rated Light action, but it is as whippy as many true UL rods. Its lure range is 1/32 - 3/8 I think.

I forgot to add the okuma to my first post. It is one of my favorite "fun" rods.
