Crunch.....

Post by raffensg64 » Sun May 11, 2008 4:16 pm

Gents, that's the sound a 9 ft. 6-weight fly rod makes when a vehicle rolls over it! Yep, I did it. At least I didn't kill the reel, something I care about more than the rod. I had leaned it against the side of the house, resting on a light, near the garage. The wind was pretty strong, evidently enough to blow it directly across the driveway. CRUNCH!!! Being that my wife was with me at the time, she now understands the importance of back-up rods, of which I have several. She just didn't get it up until that point. Anyways, I was floored, even more so when she offered to take me downtown to get another one!!!

Don't be like me!

RIP

Now that womans a keeper. It also raises the question that the "Trout gods" were upset with you for the tri-fecta and therefor sent evil fish gremlins to knock your rod onto the ground so you could run over it? TTFN (I must make a trout god sacrifice in your name to appease them). I've fixed and broke lots of rods, welcome to the club. ROFLMAO

Now why didn't I think of that!? The trout gods got even with me by destroying the very rod that landed the Medical Lake trifecta. Wonder why they spared the reel.......or is that to be my next loss?

I was up at Jamison Lake with a new Sage rod when a big gust of wind came up and blew my canopy door shut. I was just getting my rod out and it caught the top 6" of the rod. That sound is "Snap". You can blame it on "Mariah".

Ouch! A Sage?! I'm sure they replaced it, though, or would like to think they did. They are among the best in the business.

This loss marks my fourth in five years. One rod, a simple Cortland w/Okuma reel, is on the bottom of McGinnis Lake. Another identical setup was lost on the upper St. Joe, when a partner talked me into shooting some rough water in a pontoon....screw the rod, I'm very fortunate that I made it OK! The last was similar to Mark's situation. While fishing the Yakima a few years ago, I made the mistake of propping a rod up against my Jeep, with door open. A huge gust of wind came from out of nowhere, slammed that door, and turned that 2-piece Cabelas into a 4-piece Cabelas!!!

So...that's why I have to keep a few spares available!

Two years ago while exiting our 12' Smokercraft, my wife caught the tip of her Fenwick rod on her boot and snapped it right off. She was very upset and loved that rod. I bought her another Fenwick but it was a dark green color unlike the blue one she snapped. She used it and was thankful for the replacement but occasionally commented that it wasn't the pretty blue she once had and loved. So this year I bought her a Lamiglas for her birthday. It was the only decent rod I could find in blue that wasn't several hundred dollars and she loves it. I think it's actually a little nicer rod, and a little lighter than the green Fenwick I originally bought her to replace the one she snapped. So I know what it sounds like to snap a rod and it's not a sound I ever want to hear again. I have and still use the same Fenwick fly rod my dad bought me when I was 5 years old and I would be crushed it anything ever happened to it. It's caught more nice trout than I could ever think to count. Sorry for your loss.

Hang on to the old Fenwick, Dave. That rod was when they made them in the good old U.S.A. I still have my old Fenwick 857 fly rod I bought in 1976. I don't use it anymore since it is like a baseball bat compared to the new lightweight graphite fly rods.

They did replace it free of any charges. I'm not sure what they do now.
