RE:Rod Suggestions
Not really sure yet on the reel Jens.
Pooh you make a hell of a salesman. I picked up the Cert Pro 8'9" Med/Hvy Mag Taper on my way home. I'll be giving it a shakedown on Thursday at the Skok. They don't run nets Thursdays right?

RE:Rod Suggestions
I let the GF use it yesterday for a few hours on the Puyallup and she said "It's so smooth" - which earned her the old "That's what she said" response. Anyhow, she loved it.
I'm gonna go with medium black corkie and an egg sack for starters on Thursday.

RE:Rod Suggestions
Figured I'd post a question here related to the rod topic. Last year was my first year salmon fishing and I used a cheap shakespeare 8'6" Heavy rod and it had a good run before the tip broke. Didn't land any kings on it, just pinks and silvers. I bought a 10' Shimano convergence this past spring (medium power, slow action) and it worked well for steelhead. Will it work for kings or do I need something with a little more power? faster action? I see all the other rod suggestions, just want to know if I am ok as is or if I should consider another rod for the heavy hitters. (always looking for more reasons to spend money on fishing!) Thanks!

The Skokomish reports are getting me excited about salmon fishing. I have a St Croix Avid AVS90MF2 rated 8-12 pounds with medium power spinning rod. It was a Plueger Supreme reel that can hold 215 yards of 12 pound line. Can I get away with it for kings there? I was thinking of spooling it with 15 pound Pline cxx x-tra strong.

Thats good to hear. Unfortunately, the funds are not there right now to buy a heavy set up specifically for kings. My only salmon river experience is on the Puke and Green for silvers and pinks. I tried drifting with corkies at first and trying out new things like spoons and jigs. My personal best for kings was a 10 inch shaker in the Sound. Hopefully my buddy introduces me to the Skok King fishing soon.

Live and die by lamiglas... Of course that's just me...jens wrote:Very true Pooh. If you are going to spend as much time as we spend on the rivers, it really boils down to how that rod feels in your hands. Some guys I fish with don't have a Loomis or Lami and they catch a crap load of fish. And then there are those and I am one of them, who have to have a Loomis or Lamiglas and we catch a crapload of fish. If your budget is under 200, you can find several great rods available.
What is your spinning reel btw?

Good luck. I thought I'd be cute running 12/10. Nothing cute about my pouty face when fish after fish would bolt towards any snag or log or those stuped net stakes, fish off. I'd recommend minimum of 20/20.returnofthefish wrote:The Skokomish reports are getting me excited about salmon fishing. I agree with jens but to be honest it wouldn't even hurt to go higher.

i wasnt very comfortable with that set up as well. I went to outdoor emporium and looked at a few rods. I saw a Shakespear rod in the 20 pound line rating for 60ish. The Power pro 30 pound braid should be just fine. I am just not sure what kind of spinning reel could do the job. All of the sales associates were busy on Sunday, so I didnt ask anybody.

returnofthefish- remember that 30 lb braid is roughly equal to the diameter of 8 lb mono. So a rod rated for 20 lb mono should be able to handle it. As far as rod go, if you are trying to stay under $100 it is really hard to beat either the Berkely Air IM7(if you can find them) or IM8 rods or the WW Grigg GX series. For reels, I really like the Pfluger Presidential series reels, about $60 but they do go on sale occasionally. Good luck with your selection and let us know what you decide on.
RE:Rod Suggestions
I've been running 15-15 p-line CX and its been working great. My brother last week who was running the same setup on the Skok, had a king wrap him around a log and was able to muscle it loose with his 8-12lb M rated rod. When he checked his line after he landed the fish, there were no nicks or frays at all. I'd recommend using the CX instead of the CXX for Spinning outfits though.returnofthefish wrote:The Skokomish reports are getting me excited about salmon fishing. I like your thinking!.......... hehe me too. Although I did pick up a very nice reddington for floats and light spinning. Gotta find the right reel to go with it.salmonslayer117 wrote:Live and die by lamiglas... Of course that's just me...jens wrote:Very true Pooh. RE:Rod Suggestions
I run 30 or 40 lb braid, and 20 mono leader. (somtimes pline leader) I've NEVER seen a fish break it, and 50% of my snags come back with a bent hook, instead of a snapped leader. I'm sure there is a fish out there waiting to break my leader, but that's cool.
Fishing with "ultralite" setups isn't responsible. Playing a hatchery fish is all good, but you don't know it's hatchery until you get it in, and if you "played" your fish too long with that ultralight setup, you've run a good chance of hurting a native fish's survival odds.
Back on topic: My new Lamiglas Certified Pro, 8' 9" Medium Heavy, Mag Taper works great. No fish landed yet but had a monster Chinook on the line a few days ago. Fish pulled so hard the end of my bendo had gone straight again.
And uh, the 2011 models for the G1000 series are 'cranberry' in color... Not sure about the other models yet, as I haven't seen them in person.

RE:Rod Suggestions
Depends on fishing methods being used, gotta have the right tool for the style of fishing, i.e. floats, drifting, casting. Besides, one rod? That seems pretty spartan to me!Ocktane wrote:Figured I'd post a question here related to the rod topic. Does anybody have any reviews on the Lamiglas Norwest rods? Any thing that stood out or something that you didnt like about the rod.
