My Swivels Keep breaking !

Post by Fish_Bait111397 » Wed Jun 15, 2011 5:12 pm

So last year on the Skoke, I hooked into tons of fish, but lost many because of my swivels breaking.
What is the strongest brand of swivels?! :batman:
Thanks !

Never had my swivel break. Are you using a size that is appropriate for your line size? For trolling I use a Sampo bearing swivel, which run about $1 a pop. For all other types of fishing I'll use various brands but never this style: Brass Swivel Not that I don't think they will hold, they just don't seem to turn that freely. I stick mainly with Vision, Berkley and Spro brands.

One quick question, what part of the swivel is breaking? Are you tying more than one line into an eye at a time?

*Edit* The strongest swivels I know are Sampo solid ring swivels, they aren't going to break, ever!

Its funny you should mention swivels. I have been field testing some swivels. They are made out of fluro-carbon and work better than any I have ever used in my life. I am very impressed with them. They are called the invisiswivel. Check out their website AquaTeko.Com I'm sold on them.

What kind are you using? What size? and what are you using them for?

Im using Black, Size 10 Mustad Black barrel Swivel Interlocks.
They break between the swivel itself, and the interlock.
I think I will try those other brands.

And I am using them salmon-King,silver,pink,chum.

What line are you using and how much pressure are you applying!!?

Those things are rated to 80-100 lbs tensile strength. I've never broken a swivel on a fish.

Usin 20 Pound test, 17 pound leader (kings).Berkey Trilene XT
Holding my rod at a 75 degree angle or so.
But they have only broken on fish that are looking to be a bigger fish.
Atleast 17+.
Matt said there rated 80-100 ,
maybe they got weak after getting snagged on rock cliffs that are in the water at the hole that I fish there?
Hmm...

I try to find ones that are made in U.S., I find the swivels made in China break a lot.

I have never broke a swivel either and I usually run size 7 visions. Ive had swivels open up on me when Ive snagged up, but cant recall ever breaking one. Maybe you had a batch of bad swivels? I mean I buy glow balls all the time and every now and then you get some that are just duds. I mean they light up but dim and not for long. Maybe thats all it was a weak batch of metal. Anyways good luck out there.
More fish please!

As G-Man said Sampco are the best. I have never broke one. I got a ton of them once from a discount shop about 15 years ago and I am just starting to run out.

For the salt, there is only one brand. SAMPO, all the way. For fresh, I've been using the Vision brand in the proper sizes. Off the top of my head the size 7 is like 85# test so..... I can even imagine breaking one on anything in the lower 48.

PS for fresh I rarely ever use snap swivels I guess you could have a problem with the little wire bail, guess that's why I don't use them.
