spin cast reel suggestions ?
Looking for a few suggestions for a good spincast reel used for bobber and jig fishing. Would like to keep it under $200.00.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Don't let $60.00 make you think it is a cheapo reel. Smooth as silk.

Re: spin cast reel suggestions ?
Uh, did you mean to write spincast? Most people use spinning reels or baitcasters (see previous suggestions). Just want to clarify. I'm not too familiar with spincast reels and which might be better than another. If you need suggestions on the other two types I can certainly offer an opinion though.
Re: spin cast reel suggestions ?
Yeah I read baitcast. Old mind playing tricks on me!
Re: spin cast reel suggestions ?
Sorry. Yes, I meant spinning reel. I have a nice bait cast set up. Looking for a spinning reel recommendation.

Re: spin cast reel suggestions ?
IMHO, Quad's recommendation the Pflueger President is a good one. The Shimano Stradic has a good following, but I bought a Symetre a few years ago and had nothing but problems. Turns out as soon as a little moisture would get in it (rain or river) it would start to seize up. Shimano wanted me to ship it back to them claiming the gears were damaged, but turns out it just needed to be torn down and the gear grease replaced (water was getting in and breaking it down). I find I have to do this about every 3-6 months. If it gets accidentally dunked in the water while I'm fishing it doesn't take long to seize. Sounds like quite a few people have experienced this problem. It's turned me off to Shimano spinning reels for the time being. Of course there are others out there who are quite happy with their Shimano spinning reels. After reading a lot of various reviews on different spinning reels, I've come to the conclusion that price doesn't always reflect quality/dependability.Bay wolf wrote:Sorry. FWIW. Good luck with your decision.
Re: spin cast reel suggestions ?
As others have said, the Pflueger President is a good reel, and isn't too expensive. I used to use Shimano reels, but haven't bought once since I bought a Pflueger. I have yet to be disappointed by one.
Re: spin cast reel suggestions ?
I bought a Penn Battle 3000 at Outdoor Emporium. costs less than $200.
Re: spin cast reel suggestions ?
I own several Pflueger president reels. We use them for every thing from jigging to trolling and every thing in between. I have never had a problem with any of them and would recommend them any day. I believe that in 30 years we will look back on these reals the same way that we look back on the old Mitchel 300's today.
Re: spin cast reel suggestions ?
Thanks guys. This is exactly why I love this board. Great info straight!
Ok, so I'm leaning toward the Pfluger president. Since I will be using this as my primary float reel for salmon/steel, what model would you recommend? I use 40lb power pro on my float rod.
Also, what do you guys think of the pfluger patriarch? I have a lead on a used one.
Thanks.

Re: spin cast reel suggestions ?
All my spinning reels are Pflueger. I have a President a purist, and two Supreme XT. The Supteme XT is a superior reel. Lighter, better drag and durable. My President is showing signs of wear at the bail after a year of hard use. Still a great reel thou. 20-30 pound braid for float fishing steelhead and salmon.

Bay Wolf,
There was a Patriarch (sp?). On here recently for sale, maybe that is the one you are looking at? If not, comb the classifieds.
Only because you asked, I will mention there is a guy on here that goes by,"Sickbayer". He posted some pretty unhappy reviews of the Patriarch reel you are talking about. However, I kind of thought that it was a VERY random occurrence of an unhappy user. Look through his posts to see what the issue was.
I thought of purchasing one of these one day myself.
Also, on the reel size you asked about.... They come in different serial #'s per size.
Basically go to your local vendor, Outdoor Emporium in Seattle, Sportco Fife, and hold the reel in your hand to get a sense of it.

Re: spin cast reel suggestions ?
I have about 7 spinning reel setups. I have 4 Pflugers and have found the lesser expensive models tend to be not so good. I do however have a president model and I love it. Last year I wanted another quality spinning reel. I went out planning to spend anywhere from $100 to $200. I picked up a Shimano Sahara at Cabelas and put it on a rod. Feeling this reel on a rod, it seemed to be a nice reel and it was only $79.99. After a handfull of trips to the store trying to convince myself to buy a more expensive reel, I found the Sahara to seem just as good as the $200 reels. I bought the Sahara and heve been more than happy with it. It reels smooth, casts a mile and the bail has no issues tripping over when reeled. Since I got this reel, I told myself I would recommend it to anyone that ever asked what spinning reel to buy. I love mine and if I add another reel to my colection, I won't even look around. I will just o buy another Sahara. I guess I can't say it's as good as a $200 reel but at this point I have no need to find out.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Re: spin cast reel suggestions ?
You did not say if you wanted new or used, but i think there are some good used reels out there. My favorite reels are the daiwa advantage, sol, and fuego spinning reels. They ran right bout that price range, and i find them around. I picked up an advantage 2000 for 99.00 new at sportsman's warehouse just last month. There tough and good reels. I have my original 2000 advantage for the last 5 years and it has battle scars from me falling while walking in the river and on the bank. I sent it out to be serviced once, and thats it. I repair my own baitcasters but not spinners.
Re: spin cast reel suggestions ?
After looking over all the great information and suggestions from everybody I went down and put my hands on a lot of reels and scoured the internet for reviews. I ended up with a Simano stradic FJ. There might be far better reels and there are certainly more expensive reels. But I got a heck of a god price at the PX and from all the information I was able to gather it is a pretty solid reel with exceptional smooth operation and a very good drag system.
Thank everyone for all you excellent input, suggestions and information. Now it's time to test my new reel on my very first steelhead!
