Weather's effect on fishing fact or fiction

Post by MackPrince » Tue Jul 29, 2008 11:47 am

Yesterday I was able to time a productive trip to Merwin to troll for kokanee based on some past experience with peak fishing times related to weather. I could be superstitious but here are a few tidbits that I follow related to fish habits and weather patterns. Given our recent extended spell of sunshine when the weather man predicted a low pressure system moving in I wanted to get out on the water. Yesterday the weather at the lake was clear and sunny in the morning with clouds in the afternoon. Today is overcast with scattered showers.

*When there is a drop in barometric pressure fish feed more and become more active (Low pressure system) When weather begins to change to cloudy from consistent sun filled days the fishing peaks.

*If the low pressure system remains cloudy or scattered showers during the day fish will come more shallow and agressive on the bite until this becomes the norm after a couple days. Trout come up in depth and bass hit the flats.

*If stormy weather or consistent rain continues the fish are less active and go to deeper and calmer water in a hurry.

*When a high pressure system begins to move back into an area that was stormy or mild the fish are increasingly active until the cloud free skies resume and persist. Fish will begin to move to their normal depth.

*With a steady barometric pressure and extended nice weather with occasional clouds fishing is consistent day to day. Fish structure, drop-offs, and the average depth for the target species. If a long hot spell of sunshine sticks around the fish will go deep for cooler water.

Overall if fishing is good get it while you can, if it is lousy or slow time your next outing with a weather change. What do you think? My proof is in the freezer. :)

That sounds reasonable.... I know nothing about weather and fishing's relationship. But that all seems to make sense.

I've had great luck paying attention to the weather...pretty much exactly as you've laid it out.

Moon phases, on the other hand...I just can't seem to get me experiences to jive with the theory.

That's great info MackPrince. Way to lay it out. Monitor fish activity in relation to the tides as well as the weather conditions you've stated and see how you do. I think you'd be surprised. Same is true with moon phases. It all works together. If you can find the right combination you will have an amazing day. Keep at it and good luck out there.

Fishn- I agree moon phase is another big factor for feeding/fishing activity. I love night fishing with a new moon, with less natural light the kokes come right into the lantern and floating light zone to feed on the little water bugs that are attracted by the light.

Is there a place on the internet where I can monitor barometric pressure in my area?

The easiest is the local news stations page, or at weather.gov.
