Camping and fishing this week

Post by yehe » Tue Apr 17, 2012 8:27 am

Hi all,

Planning a small camping trip in westen WA with my son. possibly to mid-south of the state.

Any ideas for a nice camping site near or with a lake for simple shore fishing?

locations and bait info needed will be very much appreciated....the lower key the better :)

thanks a bunch

Riffe lake would be a good option. There is good shore fishing available for landlocked coho (silvers), either at the various campgrounds or via a short drive. I have seen landlocked silvers, adult salmon and steelhead caught at both sides of the dam. They catch huge numbers of silvers at the bridge at the other end of the lake. Rigging is simple, a bobber stop, small bead, slip bobber, small egg sinker, another bead, a swivel, 2' of 6# fluorocarbon and a #8 bait holder hook with a small piece of cocktail shrimp/and a bit of worm. Start with the bobber stop at around 4' and adjust as required to 12-15' until you locate the fish. Keep your catch on ice, the flesh is delicate and will get soft if it isn't kept chilled. Good luck and have a great time.

reporting from the field - all you mentioned was right on. Thanks for all the info. My son had a blast. Shore-fishing is great in both places. Lots of silvers caught by many. A local guy said it was slower then other days. Probably the rougher weather. But still seem like everyone got their daily max.

Some people used worms. we used shrimp & white corn and later worms. We saw that some folks sprayed their bait or dripped scent on it. The sprayers had a blast. Not sure if they sprayed money on their bail but it worked well.

There is another popular spot with the locals, just near the bait shop/campground in Sulkum - by the Barrier Dam. We tried a bit but no luck there.
