Fish Lake near Wenatchee

Post by Matt » Sat Mar 13, 2010 7:52 pm

Hey all,

I am hoping to visit fish lake late in April with my girlfriend in search of some sure fire trout action to keep her entertained. I have never fished the lake, but have heard a lot about it being a great trout spot. I have a 16' open platform starcraft and in the info section on here it says you can't launch a boat there because of an obstructed launch? Wondering if anyone has any info on using the launch there and if I would be able to get my boat in the water.

Thanks in advance!

Matt

Hey Matt, The Cove Resort has a boat launch, fee required. Great fishing! If you want some inside info, shoot me a PM.

Thanks SD. Checked out the cove's website and saw pictures of the launch, very reassuring. Hopefully Mike will see this and can update the info in the lake index?

Sent you a PM too. :)

Hey Matt. Taking your woman to fish lake will be a blast for her. The fish are fearless and you will definately catch some fish. I have trolled Rooster tails, wedding rings, pop gear and rapalas... They have all caught fish for me. Ive caught them fishing with a bobber and power bait, hook and bait when fishing for perch... In other words... There is a ton of fish there and easy to catch. You guys will have a blast!

The cove launch will have no problem handling your rig. Wedding rings w/ worm should have your 2 limits in about 2 hours. Some times a tiny dodger in front of the wedding ring makes all the difference in the world. After you limit out shoot to other side of the lake, there you will find the flats. Toss jigs tipped with worms for the nice sized perch, some years its pretty fast action as well

Hey Matt...as the others have stated, go to Cove Resort and have a blast. Scotty will set you up w/ a Hi Lake Special which will work grood...but EVERYTHING this time of year will work for the bows (there's no big secret here)...especially if its tipped with a small section of worm, but powerbait, eggs smellows etc will all produce with a lure. If you launch at the Cove, go out and hook to the left, head about center lake, then just troll all the way down to the other end. Be careful this time of year as storms and wind can come through pretty quick and turn the lake to white caps in a hurry. In a small boat w/ electric motor, this is even more important. You will not have a problem catching fish, the majority may not have a lot of size to them (10"-12") but you guys will have a great time! Let us know how it goes and have fun!! :geek:

There is a public launch (free) on Fish Lake. It's on the North side of the lake off the road to Trinity (FS 62). It's an obstructed (big rocks) launch for only hand held small boats, so the info. on here is correct. You'll have to pay if you want to launch a large boat at the Cove.

The size of fish has steadily dropped over the past 5-6 years. I suspect the rapid infestation of squaw fish and the voracious osprey tastes. The WDFW stocks the heck out of it, so it's always a good bet. It's a very dangerous lake in a small boat. The winds can come up in a hurry and I've seen many people get into trouble. Use a wedding ring with worms along the N. side or far east end and you'll catch a ton of fish.

Thanks to everyone for the replies! I am more excited than ever to hit it up now, I have always wanted to fish this lake since I was a kid and I am finally going to get the chance. Weather will not be an issue, I have a 16' open platform Starcraft with a 65hp merc main and 3.3 hp merc kicker, I think the beam on her is about 80" and it handles just fine in all conditions, got stuck out on Sammamish in high winds last week and got beat up pretty bad but the boat did just fine, and I've had her out to Orcas Island from Bellingham several times in 1-2 foot wind waves. What would be recommended for targeting the Browns in there? Do they tend to hang in similar areas as the rainbows? As far as gear goes we are set, I tie my own wedding rings and have a box full of 4/0 dodgers I use in the summer time for kokanee, also have gang trolls, etc. I think my technique is probably going to be a wooly bugger on a sink tip flyline for myself and an F5 flatfish trolled extra slow for the lady, both techniques never seem to fail for trout :)

You'll do well trolling flies and flat fish. The wind usually starts up about 10-11am. People do well drift fishing with the wind. Ice just went off last week and large browns will move into the shallow water to feed. The N. side of the lake is good early on. I was going to try and make it over there this week, but it's looking like snow and cold all week. When are you going?

I am heading over the last weekend of April which, as it turns out, is the trout opener over here. I wonder if it is going to be pandamonium over there with a bunch of people thinking it is "opening" day, haha.

Presently I have plans to try some sturgeon fishing in the Snohomish system next week. :-$

Probably busy, people tend to hit even year round lakes around hear on opening day, which makes not alot of
sense since most have been hit hard right up to the opener. I would imagine alot of folks over there.
Fishing ought to be really good!!

Great lake for usually fast action. Ton of bows and a fair population of browns. Try some rapalas close to shore (trolling). Perch are very numorous there and the browns like to hang near shore to ambush an easy meal. Gotten some nice browns up to 5 pounds in the past. You'll have a great time!
