bathroom breaks on the boat

Post by Rollin with Rolland » Wed Jul 01, 2009 2:11 pm

I'm sure this has been covered already, but I can't remember a recent thread. This comes about because today, with the crab and salmon summer opener, it was rather crowded out there. What do people see as an acceptable bathroom break with an open boat?? Do most people like the "container" idea or just "hang it over the side"?? I have a very good fishing friend that has different idea's than myself. Sometimes, the argument can get in the way of fishing. What is the consensus?? The most respectful way to use the bathroom on the boat?? What do tourny guys do?? Float tube or toon?

If I just have to pee, I tend to hang it over the side if not in danger of offending nearby boaters/shorefisherpeople. Otherwise I'll find a container to keep it discrete (I try to keep an empty water bottle in my fishing duffle). Women folk get transported to the nearest shorline/bathroom. Kids - depends on the gender, age, and situation.

OK, you know that bailing device you are required to have on your boat? That's the pee pot. I make mine from a sturdy plastic jug by cutting off the bottom of the container. Glue or duct tape the lid on if your worried about that sort of thing and there you have it, a dual use device. The large Costco sized juice containers work great for this. The plastic is very thick and it has a built in handle for easy one handed operation. Add a privacy curtain that you can hang from your bimini/canvas cover for the gentler gender and your good to go.

I use the same method as you G-man. I do however have a brother in law that believes that he needs to pee over the side of the boat for good luck Depending on how crowded the area we are in is or if we can see woman on another boat that can see him standing on the cuddy of the boat doing his thing, I will not allow it. He can't try and pee from up there if I'm standing behind him ready to push him in the water (And he knows I would). It just comes down to respect.

I carry a small bucket onboard. Did I say small...I mean VERY LARGE MANLY Bucket. Bob would be so proud.
My wife purchased this for me awhile back. (Photo below)

Pee jug for the men and a bucket for the ladies (also a privacy blanket). If its a #2 that anyone has to do in the porta potty I let them know that they are responsible for getting the loaded bag off the boat. I don't care if folks in other boats hang it off the side to go. I do appreciate if they do it down wind from me.

Big D,

That's the truckers friend that you have there. I carry one in my pickup for those long drives and I don't want to stop and water the bushes along the way.

Die hards use a catheter. :cyclopsan
Like Big D's post. Get one of those or a wide mouthed Gatorade bottle. What else do you need. In open water with no one around hang it over the edge. In a tube just go in your waders.
No really, when I'm in my tube I always look for a good spot on the bank and get it done. When nature calls hopefully people will understand. Now.....we are just talking about #1 right?

I read and article awhile back that made a lot of sense. It said that a lot of drowning victims recovered from the mouth of the Columbia River had one thing in common.
They were found with their zippers down. Be careful while hanging it over the side. One rogue wave when nature calls and you could be a floater.
