Do you guys think an 18hp 2 stroke motor is trollable?(word?) I had a 1968 20hp johnson but thinking of going a little newer with a 84 mercury. Another question, when did they change hp rating from powerhead to prop?

I suppose it would depend upon how slow/fast you wanted to troll and on what sized boat you have it mounted. Also something to consider is minimum rpm and prop pitch. Worst case scenario, toss out a drift sock to slow you down.

I can't help you with your second question, I'm sure someone on here will get you an answer though.

They make plates that you mount the bracket on the motor, and the plate swings down behind the prop to slow down a bigger motor. Look into that.

It would go on a 15ft gregor. Just worried about fouling plugs.

If you are using a good quality 2 stoke outboard oil, I would not worry too much about fouling the plugs. I always kept a spare pair of plugs in the boat with my old motor, but never had to use them. Today's outboard oils are designed to burn more completely and still lubricate better than the old stuff. However, with that motor on a 15' Gregor, you may end up trolling a bit quick for kokes.

Best idea going... You can pick up a transom mounted 30 to 40lb thrust eletric pretty cheap and it should have more than enough pep to troll with.

i use a wind/drift sock too....have 17 ft jon boat with a remote control bow mount troll'r...lolol i love troll'n with that thing...anyways makes it real easy if'n your try'n to say do a side drift across the lake use'n the wind ...with a buncha poles hang'n off one side and keep it strait...work the same with the sock on the bow and a transom mount.....DOG

Suppose it's too late since I just picked it up. I already have a bow mount powerdrive, but I like to keep the juice for the bass or walleye. After the test run, I'm definately going to have to install a trolling plate if I plan on using it that way. I have a 7.5 I've been switching to if I know I'm going to be trolling all day. I was just tired of switching motors or bringing both with me. Not enough realestate to hold both. Thanks guys, any recommendations on plates?

any boat store over there should be able to get one/have one in stock.

Minnkota:thumleft: As far as horse power 20 hp is 20 hp no matter the motor year.

ya thats not true.....up until the mid 70s horsepower for boats was rated at the power head now there rated at the prop.....and now ya know the truth....happy easter

From the research I found, the hp rating changed in 84, which so happens is the year of the motor I picked up. Took it out saturday and runs great. Plenty of power for my boat

i knew it changed in the mid years wasnt sure if it was in mid 80s,or 70s but you should be fine. just carry extra plugs.
