Northwest Fishing Reports

So I was out fishing American today and my trolling motor cable snapped. I have an old Evinrude Intruder 74 FPS motor that they don't make anymore. I have no idea what year it is and how to find replacement parts. Anyone have any helpful suggestions? Do they make any trolling motor pedals that are interchangeable with different models? This sucks! I've been putting in so much effort with this boat to make it more friendly and then I'm OOC for such a dumb problem. Thanks all, tight lines!

I know you said they don't make it anymore, but the great thing about the internet is that with a little searching you can always find some other folks who are freaky collectors of whatever it is that you have in your garage....

That was just a 5 minute search. What I'm really saying is that you should find a forum like the 1st link, and then get into guys who are all into old Evinrudes, someone will know someone..

I have a simliar model of old Evinrude trolling motor with cable steering and I have broken my cable 3 times! Tanglewilde Marine in Lacey (about a 1/4 mile from Cabelas) located a cable for me a couple of years ago. I did the install myself and it worked great for a couple years. Harry Schlening is the owner and is one of the most knowledgeable motor guys I have ever met. I worked in a shop next door to his for about 7 years. He's kind of cranky but will always shoot straight with you.

Mine broke again recently but I was able to do an on-the-water repair for and it has held so far. Basically, the cable had just enough threads left on the the pedal end to reattach. I also relocated the foot pedal a little closer to the front seat and further away from the bow to reduce the tight curves on the cable. Not sure if that really helps but it seems to make sense to me.

Question for you, is your motor 24V? Mine is and each time the cable has broken it was when using it on the higher 24V settings. Too much torque applied by the motor to the steering cable at that speed. Impossible to steer at that setting, you just have to position the pedal and engage the power and hope it stays in the direction you want it to. I am trying to figure out a work around since I don't want to spend another $60 again to replace the cable once more. My solution for now is to only use the 24V when moving a great distance from one spot to another, not for positioning for casting. Fairly short moves only when it does not make sense to fire up the outboard.

I'd be curious to find out how you fare on the repairs on yours.

that's a roger that on Harry....i suggested him a few months ago for some 1 want'n a new/used inboard..not only is he good for parts like that...but has boats forsale sometimes...and used motors..in and out boards...and his advice and wrench work are outstanding the groutchy 'ol ba#@%%^&...and he likes cash..wont take a CC..lololol...if your try'n to cobble something together dont bother...but if your try'n to get it fix'd right with the correct parts Harry's the guy... i learned a long time ago i didnt want the budget guys work'n on my stuff...if a guy was going to repower a inboard i'd send you to Harry and you'd like me afterwards lolol...DOG

Yeah mines a 24v. It snapped when i was doing a fast turn too, interesting... I'll have to give him a call tomorrow, thanks for the number! I was gonna call motortechva also, they helped me with some other parts for that motor. I'm pretty sure its one of the later models that is basically a minnkota with evinrude stickers. Pretty much is an exact copy of a minnkota Edge. Thanks for the help you guys, I'll let you know how I make out, can't wait to get back on the water!!

Bad news- my cable broke today again. I guess I will be contacting old Cranky Harry at Tanglewilde marine too. Going to have to look at some other motors, I am not happy with this one.

If you plan on keeping your boat for the next 5-10 years upgrade your trolling motor it will save you lots of headaches and probably save you money in the long run ( no canceled trips, replacing cables you know are an inherent weak link multiple times,better performance and def better batt life ) just my two cents.
