bi-mart has them for around 12.00 for the 4", 14.00 for the 6' both the wood handle and the newer soft handle, they come with a nice sheath and a sharpener. they have other brands and all were under 20.00.kuttkilla wrote:How expensive are the Rapala fillet knives? Are we talking about $40 or $60? I'm just trying to get a ball park figure. I mostly fillet larger trout (1-8 pounds) and would be using it for this purpose only...my Ken Onion switchblade does the trick for bleeding the fish upon immediate catch and trimming fins and fat from the fillets.panfisher wrote:rapala's have been around for awhile they are a good all around fish knife and i have several.

RE:Fillet Knives
I have an intruder fillet knife that I have had for a couple years. I like it, haven't had to sharpen it yet. www.intruderinc.com they also sell a glove that could help kuttk from cutting them fingers, but I didn't like the glove. The knife is good though.
RE:Fillet Knives
Thanks for the glove idea...bassmasterderek...great idea...and it would have saved a lot of bleeding...bassmasterderek wrote:I have an intruder fillet knife...they also sell a glove that could help kuttk from cutting them fingers...
RE:Fillet Knives
If your knifes do get dull, we have this really nice electric sharpener.
its a Chefs Choice - Proffesional Sharpening Station. So thats something some of you might want to look into.

kershaw fillet knife, this one in the link is a cheapo. Look around this site there are some good ones in here.
The 6 inch fillet knife is very nice for smaller fish and it is only $10!
The other one I have and like is the 9 1/4 inch fillet from kershaw, I think it was thirty dollars but well worth it for small and large fish. I did see an adjustable one in there and that sounded really cool as well. But I already spent the money so oh well.

Just throwing in my $0.02 but there are different uses for different knives! You can't go wrong with those rapala knives for smaller fish! I love how flexible the blade is and I use it for cutting and wrapping game also. But if you are going to be processing bigger fish it would be wise to get one of the other knives like the Gerber or Kershaw that has a stouter blade.

Go with the rapala it is a good hardy knife, razor sharp and the flexibility is very useful!kevinb wrote:What would work better with kokes and walleyes?:-k

RE:Fillet Knives
cutco.com has the best filet knife i have ever use and one the best thing about this knife is the steel is top grade and it is extendable it goes from a 8" to a 12" for those big fish and it has a sharping stone right on it and a grove to sharpen your hooks but when it comes to sharpening a knife go to a cutlery store and pick up a diamond stone for 20 bucks or so there what chefs us in the kitchen ............ i happen to be one of those and i have a cutco filet knife and i do all the cutting for the restaraunt and my personal cuts and it is one of best i have ever used and not to mention cutco has a lifetime garentee on all there knifes they might be a lil spendy but thats what you gotta pay for quality and a lifetime ganentee.
rippin lips and kickin ass is what im about!!!!!!

RE:Fillet Knives
Those little boxcutter knives work great for filleting small fish. The blades are very sharp and flexible. They don't hold an edge very long but swapping in a new blade is quick and easy. The price is right -- a knife plus 10 replacement blades cost $1 at the Dollar General store.
