Dove season less than a month away!!!
Anyone out there dove hunt? I have been out scouting in the Yakima Valley and there seems to be tons of them around. Where do you find them? Any wheat field that has been disced on a gravel road with the irrigation water on has a lot of them on them early in the morning. Curious to see if there is anyone out there that hunts the little boogers.

RE:Dove season less than a month away!!!
I like hunting doves (read that as "shooting AT doves) but don't have a regular hunting partner anymore, nor do I have a spot.
Last time I was out was about 4 years ago over at Moses Lake. I had thought since I shot 5 stand regular that the dove wouldn't stand much of a chance. Years ago my average on doves was 1 dove for 14 shots. Then I learned how to shoot a shotgun with a few 25 scores on trap and skeet. Those stinking doves are hard to hit and my average at Moses Lake was again, 1 dove for about every 14 shots.
I had an over and under shotgun with screw in chokes. I screwed in the close chokes and the doves flew far out. I screwed in the tight chokes and they flew close. I eventually settled with one open choke and one tight choke figuring I'd be ready for any situation. Found out if a dove falls in a bunch of thick alfalfa it's hard to recover them as the alfalfa closes up overtop them.
Good luck on the opener.

You hit it on the head. That is what is so fun about them. It usually takes about a box and a half for me to limit out. (limit is 10) Good practice though. I love to duck hunt so it is nice to get the shotguns warmed up.

I think grouse season opens the same day. Talk about a fast, hard to hit bird in heavy cover. Tasty too. I have doves and California Valley Quail in my yard almost every day of the year. They're cool to watch.

You're welcome any time. Just leave your shotgun at home. I'm inside the city limits of a fairly picky town.vancouverhandyman wrote:can i pack a picnic lunch and sit awhile in your yard. i wont tell:-$Lotech Joe wrote:I think grouse season opens the same day. I have a few doves and some band tail pidgeons hanging around the bird feeders. You could get a good shot of about 10 feet from my back deck.
A nice bass is too valuable a resource to enjoy catching only once.
