surf perch.
Im thinking of surf perching this weekend out of the westport area. I have had great luck during the spring, but are they there and biting this time of year?

Re: surf perch.
This reply is a little late I bet, but if you're going for redtail they'll be there as long as you can get out far enough into the surf. The redtail bite was really good up at Roosevelt Beach this Friday!
Re: surf perch.
Lol. Yea just a bit I ended up at Riffe Lake instead. I will have to go out and try some surf soon though! I have a pretty good spot where no waders are required, but I havent tried this early.
Re: surf perch.
How long will they be biting for? I can't get out to the cost until I get my driver's liscense in March.
Re: surf perch.
Well, if they are biting now, then probably will continue throughout the year. We do well in the early summer all the way to salmon season.
Re: surf perch.
I'm looking to get into perch fishing, fished for them a lot in San Diego they bit ghost shrimp quite well down there is it the same up here? What artificial bait works well?

Re: surf perch.
We have always used sand shrimp and done pretty well. You could probably use rubber worms or shrimp?
Re: surf perch.
Nightcrawlers in the surf. Nighcrawrlers and clams, stay on the hook well. If you can dig up some pile worms, they'll eat those up too.
Re: surf perch.
Sand shrimp works really well although they tend to fly off the hook often. Use magic thread/miracle thread and wrap it on to the hook. Good luck! and be safe wading out in the surf!

Re: surf perch.
I used to love to use pile worms. Probably the best for surf perch and other bottomfish.natetreat wrote:Nightcrawlers in the surf. Nighcrawrlers and clams, stay on the hook well. If you can dig up some pile worms, they'll eat those up too.
But they are illegal to harvest now, and so don't use them.
Re: surf perch.
We should have a perch a thon out there sometime, with a fish fry at the end.

Re: surf perch.
just read about a surf fishermann drowning near Ocean Shores.
Be careful out there!
(I try to not even wade out above my knees, and even wear a life jacket when surf fishing. I've been knocked down a few times by big waves, even when I am not even standing in the water at the time).

Re: surf perch.
I want to, is there razor clamming that weekend? I have to find some way to convince my pregnant wife that it would be a good idea to drive 3 hours early in the morning. Haha. :/
Re: surf perch.
There is a dig. Get your clams, cut a few of their necks off to use for bait, then go get your surf perch.

Re: surf perch.
Is ocean shores pretty good for surf perch? There is a chance I might be heading there next week and will have a little time to try for my first perch. A have the basic idea of using a dropshot setup with two hooks up the main line but how big of hook for these fish would you want. I have razor clam meat for bait too.
Thanks guys and good luck too you.
