For the time being...lol...I'm going to try on Monday for a 40" -- we will see! It's going to be hard to top that one if we're stuck in MA9...but it can be done...it'll be fun! KTK
go get'em KTK!! i did have a little secret "sauce" on opener...:-" ......real.....:-" .....anchovy.....:-" ....oil. Although i'm pretty sure they will hit almost anything if they are hungry. So far, out of three fish, not one of them have had ANYTHING in their stomachs....just waking up i guess. Here is one quick tip that i have just noticed, but i'm sure many have known for a long time:

think about food. i have had great luck where currents continuously run over a rocky dropoff, thus providing continuous food for that monster ling down there. these areas can be quite difficult to fish (because the tide always rips), but with a proper plan and some good luck from mother nature, these areas can be fished effectively for a short window.....like KTK said...places like this will hold many ling because of the ample food supply.

let's crown a :king: on june 15th....we'll go best SEASON!!! keep the reports coming...

Sounds good. I'm going with octopus and squid tomorrow on a 1lb tuna cord/rig fishing MA10. Going to hit that slack around 11AM. Plan to be off the water by 12PM -- 6-12 -- let's hope for the best! I don't want to get "snapped" off like some people did this weekend...I'm going heavy duty and beefing up on leader strength and swivels. I have a ledge that the current sweeps over and is great for larger lings, but this was in December when a dive team went down there...it might not be hot tomorrow, but ya gotta at least try! They might show up a bit later than normal...like in June. We'll see.

Yeah there are some sub legals and barely legals around the ferry pilings. Thin picking though. The police do make their presence known, and for good reason. USCG is usually out there as well some days. Good luck and tight lines! I wouldn't know if the stomachs were empty or not as I let all my fish go (3). KTK

Most of the lings I have cleaned over the years have had something in their stomachs.

Of those we cleaned on the opener one had nothing, 1 had a small fish (Puget Sound rockfish?) and a piece of kelp and the third had a rock crab.

Over the years have found a number of Puget Sound rockfish, herring, pile perch, a mass of small salmon in one, various crabs, octupi, squid, scuplins, flounder/sole, smaller lings, other misc. fish as well as a variety of non-food objects.

Interestingly we kept to cabezon one had 7 geoduck neck tips and the other had a stomach full of crabs (normally what we see. In this case it had a couple rock crabs and a couple grace crabs. Also not uncommon to find dungies in the cabes though now that I'm paying closer attention I'm seeing more grace than dungie crabs. Heck we even found some grace crabs (as well as a couple rock) in halibut the other day.

Tight lines
Curt

Good info Curt...yeah I saw those whole crabs in that one halibut's stomach...that was pretty darn impressive...I wouldn't have thought, but it makes good sense...It's usually a rule of thumb to always check stomach contents, especially with some salmon up around Quatsino Sound...squid are prolific up there...good stuff...

It's a thread to talk about Lings, talk about strategies, locations, swap pictures and information...

I went out today and caught a 25in 10lb cabazon in 13 feet of water unbelievable!
I was using a fenwick rod with 10lb test and jigging a 1ounce jig with a white tube on it.
man it took me a while to play him
