July 16 - Aug. 15 Area 9&10 - Quota almost full!

Post by fishnislife » Fri Jun 15, 2007 9:09 pm

Who going out for the July 16th KING SALMON opener?
It has been a long time since they have allowed Area 9 summer king salmon fishing. There is going to be a lot of boats on the water trying for the 2 chinook per person, per day limit. Fishing will remain open until August 15 with a 5300 quota. I'm trying to get out with my cousin for a few days. He is heading up to Seiku the weekend before to camp and fish. We'll know at that point how well the run is going to be. Once the season opens on July 1 up there and the reports start pouring in, you can always tell if it is going to be good fishing within the Sound. I hope this is the year THE KING fishing will be "off the hook".
Also, what will you guys be trolling or jigging?

Definitely going to go out to Area 10 for the Kings at jeff's head. I know from the past few years we've caught way too many kings there that we had to let go. You can only keep hatchery fish too in Area 9 and 10 right?

Yup, they have to have a clipped adipose fin.
What do you have the most success with out there?

We just use the downriggers and have a dodger attached to the line. Most of the time out around there well just use herring. We do the salt rock thing so they last longer out during the day and well use the plastic head thing for whole herrings or do cutplugs. Hoochies will work too, try putting on a little piece of herring on the hook too if you're using hoochies, it seems to work a little better. We barely ever mooch, I don't think it's that productive in the areas we fish, we've only caught a couple down by southworth mooching in Area 10.

Do you fish it from the shore?

Haven't been out yet, but plan to go on Saturday. Probably going to be a freakin' zoo, but whatever. I have a feeling that quota's gonna go fast. I heard from someone that stopped by the Everett launch yesterday and said that all the boats he saw taking out had at least one fish. He said most were in the 8-10 pound range. Can't wait to get me some of that!

Ya, the quota is almost full. My cousin has been out twice already and he has been launching at Eglon Beach just down from Point No Point. He says that it is crazy and the fishing is awesome. The first time he went out he caught a 15lber. and a 10lber. The 15lb was native but he kept the 10lb. He also told me that a lot of boats were catching fish.
So get out there quick. :compress:

Dang that's crazy that the quota is almost full, I was going to try going to point no point Wednesday on the beach but it was raining and the dad was sick. Probably going to try Jeff's Head on Friday on the boat.

I heard from a few other people that they are getting A LOT of nates, so maybe that quota won't fill up as fast as expected. One can only hope......:bounce:

From the WDFW News Release:
http://wdfw.wa.gov/do/newreal/release.php?id=jul3007b

As of July 29, the estimated harvest of hatchery chinook in marine areas 9 and 10 is 6,500 fish.

The 7,000 fish quota is just about full. Probably will be done by this weekend. Get out there fellas!
