I was out at the jetty yesterday and I could not get a bite from anything. the only people who caught anything were at the very end an even they had to work for them. I have caught them closer before but I don't remember when.
so does any one know the best time to fish the big jetty at westport for bass and lings?
thanks

Crank you did nothing wrong I would bet
Years of pressure in that area have reduced the numbers in truth:-#

I know a couple friends of mine have been killing them every time they go out there. Small white jigs or black jigs fish parallel to the jetty have been killer according to them. I know they went out 2 days ago so I will have to find out how they did.
What time did you go? The best time to get good fish there is from about 1.5-2 hours before low and 3-4 hours into the incoming tide. Often times this is the oly time you will get them to hit. The tide Saturday was at like 4:00a.m. so the bite was off before the sun came up for the most part.
I am planning a trip out there Tuesday but not sure if I am gonna hit the main jetty or not. Tide is prime for a morning hit and then fish most of the morning into early afternoon to get bites most of the day.
The fish have actually started coming back out there compared to past years. This last year was really hot and this year has reports of it being even better than last year.
The reason things have changed so much is the way the jetty has changed. Used to be that not 100 yards out the water got deep and fast. Now you have to go out to where the old horn used to be to find deep water. I used to catch a ton of fish right there in half moon bay where the low end of the jetty is and now it is so shallow and filled in that nothing stays there but crab.

Thanks for the info guys i guess i will try to fish with the tides and be prepared to go farther next time, i was out there from about 11 to 4 using a spinner, herring and storm swim shads. the guys on the end that were catching fish were using small white grubs too so i guess i will have to get some of those.
