Spent the holiday on the chains. Family picked up 24; I got 10 more to bring 2017 total to 12. Best was 31" x 7 lbs. Water mid 60s and clarity+-4 feet. Perfect pike conditions there now. cabbage about two-three feet tall in 5-6 feet of water so you can fish all over and not just edges. but that won't last for two more weeks. Got to get over to Roosevelt for the big rage--sturgeons tomorrow.

Got my first N. idaho pike yesterday and got attacked in the process.
But we landed 2 nice pike that both put up an incredible battle, a 11lb 8 oz, brut on a S-waver in blue chrome and a 10 lb.13 oz. one, that hit a chartreuse and white spinnerbait for the main course and my arm for dessert. This fish literally jumped a foot and a half out of the water and grabbed my arm like a Piranha. Not only did it bite me but it hit with such force it bruised my arm quite badly. I may never go Pike fishing again!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not , got yah.
I also got a 3 lb smallie on a chatter swimjig,
Check out all the gory details here

Looks like you found some beauties there Rick. Too bad you didn't have the camera running when that thing bit you. Would make for good youtube.
I have been planning to fish the north end of PendOreille Lake for some time now but have never actually done it. Maybe I'll have to give it a try this year. After we get back from Last Mountain that is.
Leaving for there tomorrow evening!!! [woot] [woot]

Yes I know! The worst part is I had it on my head, but forgot to turn it on! At least I will have the scars to remember it by. LOL
Lots of bad, oops I mean good luck at L.M. I was hoping to get back up there this year as well, but it looks like I may be heading to the Mackenzie river in the N.W. Ter. instead later this year I hope.

I have added another 5 fish to my total since I last posted with a update, bringing my total to 24 so far this year. Been getting at least 2 fish every time I have been out. Not bad considering I'm learning a new water. All the fish have been from a new place so far. as I can't seem to find a pattern to speak of. Some fish have been very shallow while others have been in the deepest part of the slough, which is about an 9 ft max depth. Most have hit spinnerbaits or chatterbaits. with a few on hard swimbaits. Here is my latest addition that i got last nite.

Image

My fishing partner for the nite got this monster a 42" 21lb. beast. He was doing just about everything wrong spending most of his time throwing baits that would never catch a fish I finally get him to put on a spinnerbait although it was not one I would have pick to throw, but he still managed to hooked up on this monster. The way he is holding it makes it look much smaller and skinnier then it really was, it was a very girthy fish! Put up an incredible fight too. It burnt so much line off his reel I had to chase the fish down with the trolling motor. It broke his P.B. by over 10 lb and was only his 3 pike ever.

Image

My tape on my boat only goes to 38" so I figured out it was a 42" fish from the video I took.

Nice fish. Looks like you're getting the new water dialed in a little.

Hey Rick, that's one BIG slough in the pic. And that point of land behind the 42" pike sure looks like the SE tip of an island in a certain chain lake? What a lucky guy. I've fished for pike for 67 years and am still looking for a 20 pounder

Hey Harley it is a big slough and no its not in the chain lakes. I have been pike fishing only about 15 years and I have got 3 over 20 so far with my biggest at 23 1/2Lbs so maybe you need to find some new waters to fish. And or come fish with me LOL. Here is the video of 21 lb fish where you can really see how girthy it was, Turns out this fish was only 40" long after reviewing my video and rechecking my tape on the boat, but it is still 21 lbs. I plan to fish western Montana again next.

You don't want me in your boat, Rick, you'll never see another 20 again, ha. I guess I was cut out to be a guide. I've gotten my son on a 20 and grandson on a 17.5. Other grandson got a 45.5" sturgeon last week on Roosevelt. took 23 minutes to get him in. I almost got to Noxon a couple years ago but plans fizzled. So I was going to get a big pike in the surging pike fishery around Kettle Falls but the pike demons arrived and appear to have repeated the P.O. River catastrophy. Seems all I can get is those mid-40 tiger muskies.

I added 6 more pike to my total for the year on Saturday. That brings me to 137. Still haven't caught any big ones in CAD but I'll keep trying. [biggrin]

5 more pike yesterday brings me to 142 on the year. I only fished in Killarney, Cave, Medicine, and Swan. Got two decent fish in Killarney, one at 29" and one at 31". Weeds cover and water clarity in all of these lakes was great, but the fishing was SLOW SLOW SLOW!

Thanks for the Chain review, Mark. I was getting ichy to get back there but you cooled my jets for now. Good to hear the weeds are not choking everything out yet. I'll be chasing muskie shadows next weekend at Curlew and then will be back to pike. Haven't found any on Roosevelt but a few guys have, I guess.
Sounds like Rick has found a honey hole.

I agree. It sounds like Rick has found some great fish lately. I may just have to head up that way and give them a try. He won't say what body of water he's fishing but I think I have a pretty good idea.
