Pocatello Sportsman's Warehouse Closing

POCATELLO - Sportsman's Warehouse in Pocatello will be closing within the next couple of months, confirmed the store's owner, Stu Utgaard, Monday.

He said the credit markets have made it difficult to continue doing business. He jokingly said, "We didn't get our share of the stimulus."

But on a more serious note, Utgaard said banks effectively put them out of business.

Within the next two to three months, the store will liquidate its inventory.

The Pocatello store is just one of 23 stores nationwide that will be closing. A majority of the stores closing are located in the east. There are a total of 67 Sportman's in the country.

The Coeur d'Alene store will also close, but the Idaho Falls store will remain open.

Utgaard said he believes the Pocatello store is a good store and would have been fine if credit were available to get more inventory.

He said the store has around 60 employees and there will be help through the Human Resources department to find them new jobs.

Other Northwest stores that will be sold.

107 – Spokane, WA.
109 – Salem, OR.
110 – Kennewick, WA.
115 – Missoula, MT.
116 – Portland, OR.
124 – Silverdale, WA.
127 – Fargo, ND.

153 – Lacey, WA.
160 – Vancouver, WA.
161 – Burlington, WA.
164 – Coeur d’Alene, ID.
167 – Helena, MT.

The part about "Other Northwest closures" is not correct. I got this off of Sportsman Warehouse website

thanks Toni- I go there at least once a week and have noticed they haven't done any restocking of some of their supplies...
As much money I have spent on trying to catch a Stealhead...and still haven't, I love Sportsmans.

A really big question is the finances. In conversation with friends that are in wholesale, distribution, and manufacturing, they are all highly concerned about if and when they are going to get paid for the merchandise that they have put into Sportsmans. This is not a COD business and is done on terms. The financial ramifications of the closures and sale of other stores could be disastrous.

Marc, White Elephant will still produce just about everything you could ask for as far as fishing supplies, and it is a local business to boot! If they don't have something you need, they typically will order it in for you asap.

Also don't forget the General Store.

Local dollars represent the best investment you can make...

I do frequent The White Elephant. I bought my new fish finder there. They also have the Scotty rod holders. As far as fly fishing gear goes, they are kinda lean.
I don't go into the General Store but very rarely. In the last few years I have found them to be much higher on several things than other places. I heard from a hardware retailer in town that when we had all that snow in December, since snow shovel were rare, they were marking up the regular price on the shovels and doubling the price. [-x
It appears now that the Spokane Sportsman's Warehouse will remain open. They have a great selection of tying materials and also stock parts for the South Fork pontoon boats. Hopefully Cabela's can stay open.

Toni, or anyone, what does it mean when they are being sold to UFA Co-op? Just a different company or what?

It is a company from Canada that bought Canada's Wholesale Sports. Click on the link and go and get a feel for what they are. They have more money available to put into the Warehouse.

I was worried about Sportsman's Warehouse when Cabela's moved into Lacey. It's like watching what happens to smaller Latte Shops when Starbucks moves into the neighborhood. I know a lot of us frequent SW for selection and price . . but there is no arguing that the SW store is pretty empty weeknights . . and Cabela's still has a big draw. Just an observation. Nice to get the update off this site. Thanks Toni and others. Geez Marc . . not like you swear . . unless you're shoveling snow for the 10th time!

I noticed today, in Olympia, that Boaters World is closing it's chain. I was in there today and everything is discounted 10 - 30%. Hard times. I feel like a vulture, but you might save some as they dump their inventory. They're starting slowly to reduce.
