"The Special People" Of craigs List

Post by edge540 » Sun Oct 02, 2011 3:42 am

Ok So Ive been looking for a drift boat on Craigs list and there are about 150 of them listed within 200 miles of Seattle. I narrowed it down to a couple nice ones in my price range and started calling, emailing, taking notes printing adds and comparing them. Turns out that there are 5 boats that I like in Portland so I plan a trip down there.

I call and talk to each of the 5 parties on Friday and plan to hi-tail it down after work and look at the best ones first. As I head out I call boat#1 and he informed me that the price we discussed over the phone is not going to be enough no and that he actually wants more then he posted the boat for #-o

Call boat #2 tell him Im on my way and that I have the agreed upon amount in my pocket and a hitch on the truck. Asked if he has all papers in hand and ready to sign....... Sorry but its my friends boat and I don't have the title but I can sign a note and sign his name......#-o

Call Boat #3 Same thing, He owns it 50/50 with a friend and they cant find the title...#-o

Boat 4 didn't answer the phone and Boat #5 decided to keep his boat and go fishing since his UN-employment kicked in finally. #-o

WOW is it really this hard to buy something with a fist full of cash and the full power of the inter web at you finger tips???

Well if the cash is burning a whole in your hand.....

You can always give it me... no questions asked. It will be spent... wisely maybe not but it will be spent.

All kidding aside. Good luck on finding the boat of your dreams.

Owner number 1 can't do that... but he would have likely pulled number 2 to 5 and say well um title issues..

Ha ha ha Yea its gonna be wet running down the hump next weekend with a roll of cash in my pocket and no boat #-o

I cant even imagine offering to forge a title to sell something on cl. And with boat #1 we agreed that IF the boat was as nice as he said it was, no disappointments I would pay $3600 and take it home. The boat was posted for $3800 so I didn't feel like I low-balled him at all. Now he wants $4200..... Screw you Buddie!

What ever happened to the code of the west, hand shake deals and a mans word??:-&

you know, I was curious and actually did a search on E-Bay for drfit boats:

Drift Boats on B-Bay

I'm not endorsing using E-Bay, I was just curious about it. Any private transaction will be risky, good luck. Sounds like you know the right questions to ask and things required.

Sorry to hear your luck, but I know what you mean. Keep hunting, you'll eventually find yours. I buy & sell on CL a lot. I have been pretty lucky so far as far as sellers go. But for buyers - man o man#-o 1st you have to weed through all the scammers - then all those that read the title but not the add so are asking questions that are answered in the ad. Then more that sound like they are legit, until they show up on your doorstep...
When you do actually get a buyer like you it's like you hit the jackpot!

LOL, CL (buying a selling) sure is a learning experience. Stories like these make me laugh as I've been there and done that. I've got a long list of stories...and I don't even leave the Seattle area. There really are some "special" people out there.

I've both bought and sold from Craigslist, and had experiences like that. I sold a few cars on CL and man, I got 300 interested parties and ten buyers. Finding out which ones were legit and could show up cash in hand was a mess. But when I've bought off craigslist I've always been that guy, so seller can count themselves fortunate if they've got something I want. Especially with sporting goods stuff, there are always flakey people and hoops, I don't know why.

Sorry for your luck !

I buy BROKEN Boat motors off of CL for anything under $100, Ill buy them. Fix 'em, and depending on the motor ive sold a motor up to $700 !
Im only 13, and already got my own little boat motor repair going ! :)

What a bummer. Drive all the way to Portland and not one boat work out for you. I always check out the rods for sale, never went for it though.

Well it worked out just fine, I ended up buying a beautiful boat local here. Drove up to seattle and checked it out, talked to the owner. I agreed that the boat was what he said it was and gave him the cash. He said that he liked me after all the freaks that came and low-balled his so he threw in a couple nice new Lamiglas plug rods!!!:batman:

There are a lot of jerks out there looking for low,low prices. When I sold my 14' Hewescraft with the trailer and a 9.8 Merc on it I had a clown call me several times offering me $500.00 for it. He would call and say...."you sell my boat yet!? I'll still give you $500.00". I would just hang up.

Then a guy called me from Seattle and told me he would buy it. He said his brother in Spokane would be over to look it over with a cashiers check for the amount I wanted. He saw it, handed me the check and I gave him a receipt. Kind of hated to see that thing go out of the driveway.[crying]

(300th forum post  ) Yeah CL is a wierd place. It has its "too good to be true moments" and its "you'd be lucky to get a dollar for that" moments. I just skim through every now and then just for the heck of it. What I find the most rediculous is when people try to sell their luxury yachts for $300,000. Go to a yacht broker for that!
