2010/11 Season River Trophies

2 for 10 jensen. And they was straightening my hooks. I was using a #2 hook small presentation because it was clear water. However the fish are bigger then last year it seems. I can not tell ya how big the fish I hooked was, but can tell you that they are violent. Jump and shake and jump and shake. Took the hooks straight. I can usually tell when I foul a fish by the way they fight. Your still fairly new maybe you cant tell that one yet. But another key indicator is that there was no scales on the hook. Usually if you get a fish in a place other then the mouth youll have atleast 1 scale. Also youll need to remember I use braid. I feel things mono dont. But this is at a price. When I set the hooks I can bend them if they are smaller, also they can rip out easier. I have my drag set accordingly but its still a no stretch line. I know the risks, but I also know the benefits. And really its ok Jensen I dont hold it personal that your mad because of my success. Im gonna judge mine and your trip per avg for steelies this year instead of total caught. You get out alot more then I do. So far 1 trip in dec 2 steel for me. And I am going out again thurs. so well see whats up then. What ya got? lol So you didnt answer yet. You wanna fish or what?

Are you serious? I am salty that you flossed one, sure. I use size 2's and all the Chums, Kings and Silvers I caught this year, the fish that straightened out my hooks were, um they were hooked in the motor. You can bet your nice looking wading jacket, you are foul hooking fish. So knock it off, learn how to fish. Not so hard is it? Let see, counting me, since2 and fishinrob our tally is close to over 125 Steelies for 2010. None were caught drifting. What say you?? What say you drifters??

jsut stop esimating your fish and get a scale already......or don't post wieght.

Just my .02.......until you get a scale or seen tons of difrent fish on a scale it is hard to tell the weight.

but who cares.....the thing that matters is you are al lcatching fish and if kinghunter says it 20lbs then let him live in his dream world......I used to live in mine until I started putting more fish on the scales and realized that I was way over estimating my fish.

Knowing Jens, I imagine this is a case of friendly forum ribbing going wrong. Can't we all just get along! lol.

Anyhow, you people and your scales! Don't you see you're ruining the "fisherman's" good name?......By tradition, we're supposed to exagerate our catch! Seriously. If I'd have had a scale, I wouldn't be able to tell my story of my eight pound crappie.....and really, no one wants to hear about the 1/4 pound crappie, so why ruin it for everyone else!

Nice pics Lee. I need to get another cover for my pontoon still. But this spring/summer I will be drifting my pontoon and try my luck at some steelies and springers. I have been keeping my eyes open for a good price on an electric trolling motor for it. Maybe we can hook up so I can get some pointers from ya on this style of fishing.

No rod holders in the inflatable (my other yak has 2 rod holders, downrigger, GPS, Sonar, etc - but we like to keep it simple on the rivers). It's built like a whitewater raft with a self-bailing floor, which might work for small people, but my 205# butt is always sittin in water.

That fish was probably a summer run, just hanging out in the Wynoochee until last Saturday, when he took my jig and nearly took my rod. I had to jump out the yak in hip deep water and lodge my kayak in a tree stump (that's where the clump of grass in the picture is growing, on said stump, about 5 feet from the bank). Anyway I jumped out and reeled this guy in, and he was just flipping and jumping out of the water for a good 2 minutes before I gave up on my partner getting there with the net. Not wanting to lose him, I just waited til he settled for a second, and grabbed him right on the lower jaw with a death-grip (in stomach deep water at that point). I hollered a few times, then cut his gills, hollered a few more times, then scrambled to my yak, secured him to the dive clip, and got the picture taken. In hindsight, I didn't have to worry about losing him, he was perfectly hooked through the upper lip.

Pooh - I actually feel pontoons are superior to a kayak in the river as a fishing platform. More stability and higher up, so you can read the river easier and spot fish easier too. A good quick access rod holder is a nice thing to have too.

I'm sure others do it better than me, but my approach to kayak river fishing is pretty straight forward: Get the yak where I want it, then cast where I want it (within 5 feet of the bank, on the deep side of the river), then just drift along and keep the boat where I want it and watch out for obsticles until I get a take-down. Now that sounds easy enough, but staying safe and keeping the boat/line where I want it consumes a lot of time and effort. Drift boats are better suited to the task, but then you got one guy not fishing and paddling the whole time.

Anyways, drifting a river in a yak is a fun challenge, and catching the fish just makes it better.

Oh, and I use braid AND a bobber. Instant hookset.

nice fish all, let's see if I can find anything worth sharing... I'm stretching the posting requirements - it's not a personal best, but it is the only chinook salmon I've caught out of a river this year.
