Carrying a gun while fishing?
Re: Carrying a gun while fishing?
Good thread. I'm all for the licensed citizen carrying a concealed weapon and I recommend a gun safety course or other form of training for those without prior firearms experience. Personally, I am always armed because I've learned over the years that you never know when you might need to use lawfully justified deadly force. If it's sitting at home in our drawer and you are out and about and need it, you will wish you had taken it with you when you walked out the door. I did a quick search online and found an informational page by the Lewis County Sheriff's Office. The page contains information about the use of deadly force and some frequently asked questions that may be helpful regarding the laws on this topic. The link is http://lewiscountywa.gov/information-on ... adly-force" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; . Mason County Sheriff's Office also offers an information page. That link is http://so.co.mason.wa.us/index.php?firearms" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; .

Re: Carrying a gun while fishing?
Very good link, Dave. I am not into guns at all, but that link really answered a lot of questions that I knew nothing about. Firearms, 2nd amendment, all this is stuff that is not part of my life. It always seems to strike such a strong chord in the people who are passionate about firearms though. I suppose that I have to tell myself if the govt. was taking steps to take away something that I was really passionate about, i.e. my fishing rod, my boat, etc. Then I would be on the band wagon.
I always wonder if the fierce passion with people over potential loss of 2nd amendment rights, is felt so strongly because of the fact of potentially losing one's "Firearm" or is it about potentially losing a long standing constitutional right, regardless of what the item is? I'm going way out on a limb here,, but is the fierce debate over gun rights, about the "Gun" or the " Right to a certain item?" For me, a gun is no more important in my life than a can of corn. All that being said, don't flame me too bad folks. I love to blow "blank" up in the woods like anyone else, but that's about it.

Re: Carrying a gun while fishing?
Quad... The gun I currently carry on a daily basis is NOT a cool gun, not expensive or pretty. Folks in the know talk smack about mine. Didnt pay much either.
If I had to relinquish THAT gun, I really would not have an issue other that the loss of the cost. None of mine are top of the line. But I like them non the same. Getting more too.
If I had to relinquish my right to even have or carry one, now that would make me more than a little PO'd. That would really be a tradgey.

Washington is an open carry state, so you are legal to have a loaded wepaon on your hip in plain sight. if you DO NOT have your CPL then you must open carry. you better be legal to own/carry it as well.
i carry everytime i am on the river.
XMD40 as my main and a Sig P238HD as my back up.
i have had a couple "tweeker" encounters but never had to draw.
here is a great resource: http://forum.opencarry.org/forums/forum ... Washington" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Re: Carrying a gun while fishing?
I carry when i am fishing most all the time. I carry more for Predators unless I am fishing on the Pier then I am carring for my right to do so. not too look cool or flash it around i have had the cops called on me at lake meridian before I have carried on the lake numerous times and still do so. as I can legally! when I hunt I carry my pistol with me as a pack of wolves is usally more then 3 which would be in my rifle 19 in my clip on my 9mm and 13 on my 40 will cover a pack of angry animals. I hunt with my kids so they both carry also. my son carries the 9mm and my daughter carries a 22. when we go on a hunting fishing expedition.
quad nothing wrong with you not wanting a gun it is your choice I do not think any less of you buddy . this is what makes America Options to do one or the other.
and the open carry info is correct with out a CPL you must open carry and you must be legal to own a firearm to do so.
with a CPL you have the option to do both! and for 65 bucks it is a good investment...
only thing I say if you are not familar with firearms Please take some sort of a class to be profecient with them and safe most firearms will not fire when the finger is not on the trigger! plenty of gun stores offer class's and depending on where you live most gun ranges also offer classes... I would reccommend going to a gun store to rent various pistols to see what you like. as all guuns have a different feel and kick to them... I like glocks and XD's and M&P's polymer frames pistols not as cold as steel in the winter and lighter weight. but thats me I like all calibers from 380 - 45 I own a 380 9mm and 40 I do not own a 45 yet but shot plenty of them... glocks less safety features then the other 2 but still a solid pistol.

Re: Carrying a gun while fishing?
Thanks everyone for thier opinion. I like the direction that this thread is going. Last week I fired several 9 mm pistols at a range. I tired a Ruger, Beretta, Glock, Smith and Wesson M&P and one that I absolutely hated. Its hard to determine which one to purchase. It feels like buying a good rod, it has to feel good in the hand. A concealed weapons permit is a must of course. As others mentioned, a safety course is a very good idea for beginners.
Some guys were saying that a person should be able to disassemble and reassemble a pistol before firing the first shot. Any opinions on that?

Re: Carrying a gun while fishing?
This reminds me of a conversation I had with someone about thier grandma purchasing a fire arm. Someone recommended that she purchase a revolver, but the guy at the store made sense with a scenaio like yours. If grandma is approached by three bad guys or verocious animals, which gun is she better off with?dicinu wrote:when I hunt I carry my pistol with me as a pack of wolves is usally more then 3 which would be in my rifle 19 in my clip on my 9mm and 13 on my 40 will cover a pack of angry animals. Grandma might miss with the first two shots and have only four shots left Taking into account of the poor aim and the decreasing distance between her and her targets, what are her odds of hitting the three targets with four shots left?
Now if she had a pistol with a magazine that held atleast 12 rounds, what are her odds of successfully defending herself with 2 missed shots and atleast ten remaining?
I dont know if its just a good salesman making a pitch, but it sure made a lot of sense to me. Those 12+ rounds seem to go by quick at the shooting range. lol
Re: Carrying a gun while fishing?
And it's quicker reloading with a clip. I keep an extra clip in my pocket.

I normally have one in the boat with me. If you are looking at 9 mm maybe you should look at a 40 cal also they have more punch then a 9 mm with the magazine capacity of the 9mm.

Thats a bunch of horse squat. Extremists, you'll find them everywhere. Yes, you will want to sit down and read the entire manual and look at it in detail. At some point you will need to clean it and will need to know how to field strip it. Once you learn that guns release mechanism, its usually pretty easy from there. Have any friends that are experienced with this? Makes it a little less daunting.
There is a lot being said for doing a cleaning first before you fire it. I dont think thats necessary but I like to add a few drops of oil to the moving parts before first fire and that does require you to 'pop the top'.
Personally Im surprised classes are not required for a CCW. Just got done taking the NRA Home Safety course with my 10 year old a few weeks ago at the Kenmore Range. Im also looking to taking some more adult classes. Wades Guns in Bellevue has some that interest me. Training is a really good investment.
I visit USACarry.com for my gun talk. I'm easy to find, the name is the same. Lots of information, and a few nuts too. There are a few guys that REALLY know the deal and the laws inside and out. Some are OC all the way and some are CC all the way. The 'beat the dead dog' heated debates are fun to read. lol

Re: Carrying a gun while fishing?
where abouts do you live? I shoot alot since I reload, I shoot more than the average bear who doesn't reload there own Ammo. Ammo for 9mm isn't all that bad for 40 is Pricey also rifle ammo is high also. for my 257weatherby mag 70.00 for 20 rounds high as for the reason I reload. but thats neather here nor there. Classes are a good Idea for if you never shot a Pistol or any firearm before.. My kids are both very safe with firearms. I beat it in there heads when they were younger being I was trained on m16 and m9 from the airforce I remember all the training and used it still today!
I am not a fan of double action pistols no matter who the maker is. Sig although make a great gun I am not a fan of the DA series of the pistols.. I like single action with the backstap safety works great for me. real only safety Item to worry about is finger off the trigger no gung as fired with the finger off the trigger as far as I know.
but yes 12-13 rounds you are looking at a 40-45 cal or a 9mm in a sub compact form.. my xdsc holds 12 rounds in the extened clip and one in the pipe! my 9mm holds 16 techincally I can fit 17 in one and 18 in the other and 1 in the pipe.
I frequent waguns.org different name on that Site though I need to change my name on this Site I guess I should ask Mike or Arron to change it for me! since they are the powers to be. but my name on that Site is Just in joy lots of good info. I know a guy who does one on one with training also. old kim is his screen name great guy I shoot with him a fair amount also.

Re: Carrying a gun while fishing?
i can carry 16+1 in my XDM40 or 19+1 in my XDM9
the reason i like XD or XDM pistols is the grip safety. you must have the gun fully gripped in order for it to fire. when i am trecking through the brush, last thing i want to have happen is a branch/twig/berry vine get rapped around the trigger and.............
the grip safety is very nice as it will only fire when i want it to. i recommend you go to a range that has an XDM so you can play around with the different backstraps to best fit your hand.

The only way I tell if I'm packing or not is to really make me mad or let your pet dog growl at me. Then you'll know if Im carrying.

Re: Carrying a gun while fishing?
I carry concealed, with a permit valid in 32 states and Oregon for over 25 years.
I will not leave home without some type of handgun on my person. But I have also been trained with edge weapons and have been through multiple defensive handgun classes and I too shoot competition IDPA and USPSA at the national level.
Please if you do decide to carry, do not only get a permit, make sure you actually take several high level classes on handgun self defense. If you don't, you are just another guy with a gun that doesn't know any better, and you will be the one that ends up dead or in jail for the mistakes you make if a situation ever occurs where you need to defend yourself against a deadly force. Be responsible, carrying a firearm isn't a game or something to take likely.

Re: Carrying a gun while fishing?
Permits are a joke when living in the city. How many Gang members have permits I wonder? I never read in the 2nd ammendment about needing to register or having a permit. To me permits are a way the govt can confiscate your firearms.I worry about the two legged ones in the city. Out in the sticks I worry more about the 4 legged ones. I dont feel that I have to be permitted at all. Just to pay Uncle Sam 80 bucks for this privaledge. Ive had permits throughout life but whether I do or not is really nobodies business.Thank the Good Lord that I never have had to unholster my revolver in self defense. I honestly hope I never have too.
I also agree with Buzzer. Carrying is one thing. Not knowing self defense or taking a course is really stupid in my opinion. I've taken courses and learned from LE officers. A lil knowledge can go along way. You cant blow someone away cuz they taking your change from the ashtray. You cant shoot someone cuz they slow at the boat launch. People think if they carry they are invincable. Not true. Sometimes it just makes you a target.Be careful out there ladies and gents. The world is full of crazies. Lets not add to those numbers.

That has got to be the most true Statement in some case's. I am far from A Tacicool Person I am just I liek to think a cool person to hangout with and fish or what not...I much rather fight and get my butt whooped then Pop a shot in someone!but if wespons are involved I rather pop a nice piece of hot lead in someone then risk my life... I am a joker and like to laugh and make folks laugh by no means am I out trying for arguements unless I see kidsor elderly folks getting picked on!
I Agree with you on many points you made in your post Rac! I Also do not agree on Permits but in order for me to Carry Legally! I will have one. My days of the Saturday night specials are long gone.. and unless you have 4 legs and i am hunting you or I am being hunted then I am a firm believer of pull out, point and pull!

I may not agree with the permit thing but I also have one. I dont like bending the laws of the land. The laws are what keep us a great nation and a place to live in freedom. I do cherish thse rights.Ive traveled all over. The best sight while traveling is seeing my country or state.Damn good feeling

Re: Carrying a gun while fishing?
Just a couple things I didn't notice addressed in the previous VERY GOOD postings............If you're asking if you should carry a C/W, you probably shouldn't. Also, unless you're willing to practice "immediate action" drills (failure to feed, failure to extract) stay away from semiautos and stick with a revolver that pretty much goes bang every time you pull the trigger. Just my .02 from 27 years on S.P.D.
