First Steel on the Fly!!!!!
Well, had a great opportunity today to head out with a good buddy and go fly fishing for steelhead! drove a long ways, but it was WORTH it!!! he showed me how to get it done, i fly fish trout a lot, but never salmon or steelhead, he showed me how to swing, and 2nd cast, FISH ON! We ended up hooking, 26, yes, 26 steelhead on streamers today, pink and black are the best colors i noticed!! hardly any other people around, i got a 14lb buck that was the most fun fight on a light fly rod ever!!! I was in mid swing, this steelhead SMASHED my pink fly, leaded 4 times and took 100 feet of line before i could even realize what was happening! These fish are mostly summer run fish, a few winters starting to show. I gotta admit the fly fishing was really fun, much more of a challenge and im glad i was able to pull it off and get into some sexy steeel!
By the way guys, my buddy wanted my to not mention the name of the river, a few of you will probably recognize the river, but please keep it to yourself, he doesnt want any more people on the river which is very understandable!

Love that river, Suprised you didn't see any chrome winters in they're
There are some achievements which are never done in the presence of those who hear of them. Catching salmon is one, and working all night is another.

Sick man! i really want a steelhead on the fly sounds like so much fun.
I did get to twitch up a couple coho in a creek today on my ultralight, probably not as fun as your trip though.

Re: First Steel on the Fly!!!!!
im always trying to improve my fishing techniques...
i'm a self taught ff-erman and have taught my son as well...he loves it so much, he's taken up spey fishing and got me in on it too....i'm not that good but every 20 casts or so, i can shoot it 60-80 feet (but it wears me out because my form is terrible)
but i've never caught a stealie on a fly.
seems ironic that on a fishing website, you can't say the name of the place you fish for fear of combat fishing and trash along the banks
...so i'm not looking for your "honey hole" just the name of the river so i can make my own memories (and possibly fire up the smoker)
pm the name of the river please and I promise not to say a word. ...or lets fish it together...i'll bring my spey rod and you can try it out.
thanks!

Re: First Steel on the Fly!!!!!
That's the biggest reason I picked up the puffer stick again, Steel. So many places are going selective, it just seems like the thing to do. ...... Not to mention it's just plain old fun working a big fish with a center pin reel!!!!fishenfreak wrote:If ya think trout are fun on the fly rod, then you gotta try it out, one of the most fun days ive had in a while!!!Bodofish wrote:Nicely done!!!! Re: First Steel on the Fly!!!!!
Yep! And when a big fiesty summer steelheas hits so hard on the swing it about rips the rod from your hand and takes 50 feet of line in 5 seconds mixed with 10 full aerial leaps, well like i said theres just nothing like it! Wish i woulda got some video

That would make for some great video. Never fly fished before but looks like a blast.
