What have you dropped or lost into a lake?

Post by JimLyons » Wed Nov 07, 2007 2:46 pm

I had a fish pull a rod and Penn 209 up and out of the boat at West Medical. It was my friends borrowed rod. I called him when I got home and he asked how I did. I told him that the good news was that I had hooked "Walter" ,our imaginary monster who lives in every lake and then I told him the bad news was that Walter took his rod and reel. This happened on the last day of fishing in the fall, So on Christmas I hid a package under his tree that was labeled To: Brian From: Walter. it was a new Penn Reel. I also once took of my glasses off on a hot sunny day at Medical and when my reel started screaming I knocked them into the lake, my vision is bad without my glasses but I was able to see the 4 pound brown I caught quite clearly. My son and I were fishing in the Ocean at Oxnard CA on a charter boat and we were fishing with live Herring. My son set his rod down to rescue a Herring flopping around the deck when "something big" sent his rod and reel to Davey Jones locker. It was a rental rod and added $100.00 to the price of the trip, but we caught tons of fish even afterward on a second loaner and added a new chapter to our fishing stories.

Phones only so far. Just one that managed to bounce off a dock and straight sideways 5 feet over to the right and over the edge. And it only fell from about 3 feet.

Don't go wading with phones in your pocket either...

A 300.00 dollar portable fish finder...
It was the kind that had a suction cup mount
for the transducer. I was boating off to a new
site and the suction cup lost its suction. I didnt have the unit
tied down, so the lake swallowed it. I was more
embarresed than upset.

Ha, funny you ask, just the other day, my girl and I were out trolling and I had just hooked another bow and was releasing it using my needlenose pliers. Well, I was also driving the boat and the girl yelled "TURN!" just as the fish unhooked, so I then proceeded to drop my needlenose pliers into the drink not thinking. I was upset, but glad they were cheap.

Just a month ago I was trolling at Medical with my friend and my wife and there was this guy training for a triathalon swimming in the water across the lake. He was headed towards us and I saw him a bunch of toimes as we circled because you have to row there. We were stopped and releasing a fish when I noticed he was about ten feet away and headed right toward us. We started yelling and banging the net on the boat to no avail. He rammed us head on!! Okay it wasn't out of the boat but it was almost in it!

i have had many of these mishaps.

1. was releasing a nice spring trout and instead of throwing the fish back i threw my 20$(kinda expensive) needle nose fishing pliers.

2. was walking on the trail at round lake when i hear something fall and then CRUNCH!! my nice 40$ polarized fishing glasses are on the ground broklen so i threw them into the lake in anger.

3. was trying to get a kastmaster out of a tangle of other lures and started shaking it to get them off when o darnit everything but the kastmaster goings flying into the lake....

When I was a beginning bass fisherman I cast my grub past my dad's head, but hooked his sunglasses by accident. They flung off and sank to the bottom of the lake twenty feet away. Not a scratch on him though.

Lost a Loomis rod with a Diawa Tournament SS Whisker reel in a bay once in CA. About 10 years ago, we were playing around on these skiffs we rented (two of them, they are like 14' with like 8 hp motors) and throwing sardines and buckets of water at each other. Well we "got away" from our friends and started fishing again. They came up on us and we started the boat to get away and when we finally stopped the boat to fish again my pole was gone. I had never reeled it back up, and in the excitement it went in the drink. It was a light freshwater set-up. Perfect for bass fishing. Anyway $225. Ouch! I had bought the rod and reel like 5-6 years previous to that. I've never since been able to replace it. That was when you could buy a Loomis rod for $100 still. That reel actually cost more than the rod back then. lol. I don't buy expensive gear anymore, but not because of that. Give me any ol' decent graphite rod and I'm pretty happy.

In the same bay, I also lost a bait casting combo on a very big fish. Just had my rod pulled out of the boat. It's a sad sight to stand up, and just have that split second to think "jump in after it?!" but by that time, it's dissapppeared. The rod literally launched out of the boat. Probably a big ray or halibut.

Come to think of it, maybe that is why I don't buy expensive gear anymore. Nah, I can't afford it :)

i was about 10 when i decided to use my grampa's heavy bar to chip a hole in the 24" ice on a lake he lived on. the bar went through the ice and through my hands in about 40' of water. i've also lost a tackle box that was wide open on an innertube. dropped lures from docks, left the kids fishing poles at the fishing hole went back 1/2 hr later to find them gone. on the other hand i've found more than enough to compensate what i lost. found a nice 500.00 rod and reel outfit in 15ft of water a few years ago while snorkling and i'm still using it, would snorkle under swimming rafts looking for money (always had ice-cream, pop, and candy at the beach) found lots of good reusable gear when the water levels went down, found alot of it while snorkling aroud bridges, sunken trees, etc. maybe i found something of yours.:-"

I lost and then retrevied both of my kids.:-$ (my wife still doesn't know)

Last August I launched the boat in Newman for a little perch fishing. Since there is no dock at Newman I put both kids (5 and 3) in their life jackets and have them sit down as I back the boat into the water. I disconnected the boat and forgot to drop and anchor. In the 2 minutes it took me to park the truck and found the kids and the boat a few hundred yards away.

Neither kid seemed upset and I had to swim out to the boat. Thank God it was 90 degrees out. I asked my son why he didn't yell for me when they started drifting away, he said he was busy looking in the tackle box, and my daughter was digging in the worm container.

It's one of those stories that at the time was probably a little dicey...but looking back you can't help but chuckle a bit.

I can just see the kiddies, oblivious to what is going on, happy as a pair of clams, rifling through their stuff, then dad pops over the side of the boat soaking wet and the kids are like..."What are you doing, and why are you all wet!?".

Your secret is safe here!! :-$

Cellphones and smokes, and usually not dropped, just in my pocket when I decided that I was hot and needed a swim.

This most often occurs when camping after hitting the beverages pretty hard. :alien:

Aside from a Swiss Army knife when I was a kid (see strangest things found in a fish's belly thread) I have managed to lose my wallet, a ton of tackle that fell out of a tackle box I accidentally kicked off the boat, and my sanity. I now fish as much as possible to regain some of what I have lost as a kid.

I was fishing under a bridge and caught a little sculpin. Being the evil mad scientist that I am, I decided to cut of one of his sharp spines before tossing him back. I whipped out my Leatherman tool and snipped the pokey when he jumped causing me to jump. He went one way, my Leatherman went the other. No more of that nonsense, too costly.

I lost the nut on my baitcaster's reel handle once at Clear Lake. On my next cast the handle went over the side and a few minutes later so did I looking for it. Try walking in the silt around lily pads and looking for something while clouding up the water. It took a while, but I toe grabbed it and went over backwards trying to get it to my hand. Got it back though and was able to get a new nut and lockwasher, along with Loctite to keep it on. I still use that reel after more than 20 years.

Lost the bolt that holds my tiller on my outboard. That was hard to replace.

I took the prop off of my trolling motor to clean off some fishing line that had tangled around it. As soon as I took the prop off the shear pin (or whatever that pin is that keeps the prop from spinning freely) fell in the lake. I ended up cutting the shank off of a big hook and using that in its place so we could continue fishing. Now there is the shaft of a galvanized nail it its place and extras in my tackle box.

A few weeks ago I was taking off a spoon that my buddy let me use for perch. I stripped a piece of crawler off in one hand and the other held the spoon. My rod started bending and when I went to reach for it I threw the spoon in the water and kept the crawler. That was kind of funny. For me anyway, it was his spoon.

2 cell phones

Ive been on Decomm Navy Ships before. I wouldnt suggest swimming in NAVSTA San Diego around Pier 13.
I have never met a fish yet that respected a big purchase. You can own a $100 boat or you can own a $30,000 boat. You might be more comfortable, but don't expect any fish to care about your investment.
