RE:The almighty BANJO MINNOW
Ha! That reminds me, my grandpa hated to fish (grandma had the fishing gene). But he loved to drive the boat and be out there with us, so as a joke my uncle got him a "Pocket Fisherman". The Pocket Fisherman was one of the 1st things sold on TV (along with, and by the same maker as the Veg-O-Matic and Mr. Microphone). Anyway he used that thing until he was too old to go out anymore and ALWAYS caught fish with it.

Gringo said it was a Pocket Fisherman from one of the first infomercials (what a sad day for the world).

Not electric, all mechanical. The reel handle was about 2-3" and 1 to 1, so if you did actually cast it, it would take FOREVER to reel in, he would just put a worm on it and drop it over the side of the boat, we would fish and when we wanted to try a different spot on the lake, he would reel in his fish (he would never tell he had one on) and tell us "ok, but there are fish here so I don't know why you want to move". He'd take us to another spot, drop his line and do it all over again.

RE:The almighty BANJO MINNOW
I have caught 100's of fish on a Poeils Pocket Fisherman. As a kid, I used to fish ponds and quarry's in Virginia with mine. I wish I still had it. It was awesome and easy to transport, we used to run around in the field and catch grasshoppers and then throw them in and catch tons of bluegill and bass and catfish. Those were the days and I am not even a grandpa! Cool stuff Gringo

I think that they were called the Vortex, and they are the hottest Steelhead trolling lures on the Snake/Clearwater rivers in Idaho/Washington right now.Sam Kafelafish wrote:Or what about crankbaits you often or used to see in the commercials for goofy fishing shows that had the blinking red light in them...
Vortex has closed their doors, but there are other water activated lighted lures being used for night trolling for steelhead now.
Just goes to show that what YOU think is a joke can actually be effective when used by a knowledgeable fishermen.
Still, if it is in an infomercial, think twice before falling for it. Can you say Roland Martin's Helicopter lures?
Too much water, so many fish, too little time.
RE:The almighty BANJO MINNOW
OK all you naysayers, I just received my christmas issue of the Bass Pro Catalog and lo and behold there before the eyes Jimmy Houston, Roland Martin and Bill Dance was an ad for " The Banjo Minnow". ON Sale Now!!!! QUESTION ?????? Does the fact that it is in the BPS Catalog mean that this a legitimate fish catching lure
RE:The almighty BANJO MINNOW
I just got that cataloge too, and there's more clothing and crap in there than fishing gear. It's just an attempt to make the consumer consume.

RE:The almighty BANJO MINNOW
If it has Bill Dance or Roland Martin on it, I know to stay clear. They are pitch men who long ago sold out their credibility.

RE:The almighty BANJO MINNOW
I don't get how any bass thinks any lure people throw at them look real but i think the banjo minnow thing might work for something like lingcod up at neah bay more better than bass.
RE:The almighty BANJO MINNOW
I don't think you've seen a Huddleston trout, or any of the higher quality swimbaits made now a days Jbball.
aka Powerworm
RE:The almighty BANJO MINNOW
and some of the higher end crankbaits like luckycraft because of their amazing color patterns.
RE:The almighty BANJO MINNOW
I have a set of Banjo Minno's that I got for Christmas one year and the only time that I use them is during the spawn when the fish are real aggressive. There are plastics that I would rather use on the spawn, but I figured that I would get some use out of them somehow.
The only infomercial bait that I actually like is th Flying Lure. I have caught a ton of bass on these things. I like using them if I spot a bass that is under structure that cannot be pitched or skipped to (i.e. branches and docks that are flush with the water).
I am pretty much with everyone else's opinion that infomercial crap isn't all it is cracked up to be though. There are better cheaper lures out there.
