Re: 2013 Humpy Fishing Bloopers and Blunders
took my toon to the Duwamish for the first time and found that 1, my net is to long for it and 2, a toon spins a like a dang top while sitting still on calm water. Foul hook one in the tail, a big ole buck with a giant hump, he must of spun my a dozen times before I could get him into the net.
Also, My first time on the puyallup was 2 years ago for the pink run, I took a 3/4 to the chest and another to 3 inches to the right of the berries on back to back days. The first one was my fault, oh look in a tree let me yank... ouch. the second I was walking back into the water after tying up, dude forgot to mention hot lead. Went home early that day.
Had a large coho last year make a run thru my legs and just as I lifted my leg to spin out of the way she jumped and drilled me... direct hit. Went home early that day as well.

AMEN! good job Nate! I thought about you the other day when My buddy kept losing gear in fish he snagged. He kept saying " someone's going to get a tackle box of gear when they catch that one. I remember you told a story of a big Coho or King in the wallace that had like 16 hooks broke on him in various places and you cleaned him up and let him go.natetreat wrote:Ha! There has been a lot of slipping in the mud and falling on the rocks. I too have lent some gear to unfortunate anglers. I have so many of them! Just the other day, we hooked a pink that seemed to be fighting pretty hard for it's size. We couldn't get it to come in at all. Eventually we figured out that it must be snagged on the bottom, and it was futile. We decided to break it off, and it turns out he was stuck in some line on the bottom. A lot of it. He had three jigs in his mouth, about 30 yards of hi-vis wrapped around him, another 20 of stren blue, with a leader and cannon ball snagged in his back. And he still bit our shrimp! He was around ten pounds, big for a humpy. We cut all the line off, removed the hooks and jigs and sent him on his way. If he can survive that much, he deserved a good lay before he kicked the bucket!
my blooper for this season is when I mouth hooked a big buck this weekend and a snagger fishing next to me came over and looked and said " mouth hooked, Ive never seen that" what can you say.......

It wasn't a Pink, it was Silvers last Wednesday. Launched at Everett as always, this time by myself. Arrived near the Shipwreck around 7AM. Got out my rod and laid it on the gunnel of the boat while I put a herring strip on the squid. Tossed the flasher overboard and grabbed my rod and.....oops..... I never attached the flasher to the Sampo swivel on the end of my line!
I fumbled around trying to get my net but the flasher sank out of sight before I could take a stab at it. Pretty new flasher too.

Watched a special character launch his 20ft+ boat down the Cady Park ramp in Snohomish a couple weeks ago. I saw from across the river as the bow was rocking on the trailer and thought, "Aww, he's not THAT dumb...". Of course he is! haha
Damn near steamrolled a guy near the end of the ramp. I couldn't believe my eyes. Funniest thing...if you can call it that...is that he just jumps out of his old black Chevy CC and acts like it's completely normal. Totally ignores the guy who damn near got killed a couple seconds prior going "WTF man?!". I'm really thinking it wasn't his first time doing it. Loose cannon is all I can say.

I wasn't going to admit this aloud but I managed to throw a $200 knife into the drink just off dash point a few weeks ago... When an unbonked fish gets loose in the boat & I've got shorts & flip flops on, all bets are off. However, I do believe wholeheartedly that it was his fault for bringing said knife onto the boat in the first place.
How many of the bloopers in this video do you have under your belt? I've got 4. So far...

The fish that got away, gains at least 2 lbs a day. It's science.

Bill Dance is the man! My favorite is the snake. And the camera guy overboard. And the treble "It's in past the barb. Call the doctor."
Re: 2013 Humpy Fishing Bloopers and Blunders
Good grief just reading your recap made me laugh loud enough to scare the dog sleeping next to me lol The whole thing was awesome!

That rod had to be the best blooper so far this year, specially cause it was on film! ;)oneshot wrote:I just watched myself break a friends pole about 20x on video.. as if i didn't feel bad when it happened, I feel worse now.. hahaha.. but the video is funny..
I watched a good buddy whom has never salmon fished, 3 times yesterday, when he hooked up and the fish finally saw the boat, and went spastic, my friend went spastic too and lost every fish.. funny stuff.. \m/
My rods have taken a beating this year! Had someone on the boat that broke off, flipped the rod to get the remainder of the line out, and the whole top half of the rod flew off and slowly sunk into the Snohomish.
Watched a jig slingshot out of a humpies mouth and stick to Steelheadin360's back! I was scared for a second till we realized it didn't actually hook him, and was just stuck, that's what he gets for fishing without a shirt! ;) lol
I hooked into one humpy the other day, and felt something really weird, when I looked down the line to see that the hooked fish had flossed another one, and it was thrashing around trying to get the line out of it's mouth lol. Almost a 2 for 1!
And oneshot should have some awesome blooper reel of the complete chaos that ensued when he hooked into the silver!

If you look closely you will find the boat Nate was referring to in my picture I posted. Another one I saw this year, was a guy setting the hook so hard he dropped his pole and lost it...

This exact same thing happened to me this morning. Reeled in a silver and was it was doing the crazy eight thing right in front of us on the bank. The guy next to me realized the fish was hooked in the mouth and began to murmer over and over in the most perplexed and amazed fashion "it's hooked in the mouth....it's hooked in the mouth" I truly think he had never seen a mouth hooked fish before...
Re: 2013 Humpy Fishing Bloopers and Blunders
I don't think that's the one. The boat was anchored half way from that boat to the bank. Pretty much right on top of us.luisdabeast206 wrote:If you look closely you will find the boat Nate was referring to in my picture I posted. Re: 2013 Humpy Fishing Bloopers and Blunders
I think so many humpy fishermen have only ever snagged fish as they are only part time, every other year and it is too much trouble/work to learn how to fish.....
Re: 2013 Humpy Fishing Bloopers and Blunders
I can definitely contribute!
Had a 1/2oz cannonball come flying back at me while fishing the Puke with barbless hooks and hit my pole dead center. I looked at my friend and said, "You know what sucks? I could probably look up and down this rod for 10 minutes and not find a mark, but I'll bet it broke the resin. Next time I set the hook or fight a fish I'll bet it breaks." Sure enough, next cast, next fish; rod broken. Dang it! Luckily it was an Okuma Celilo and Sportco had them on sale for $35 that day!

The blooper I enjoy are those who dont carry a net. I took my salmon net and added 6 feet of doweling to the handle. For the rivers its perfect. My buddy left to hit the Sky for pinks. I said take my net, its worth it. Hahaha He didnt take it. They lost 7 fish because they didnt want to carry a 2 lb net. They got fish to the rocks and tried to lift them up. Hahaha No salmon carrying eggs can be forced like that. I 'll bet he takes one of the nets this weekend.Even my trout net is better then no net. I netted a slew of pinks with the trout net.
Re: 2013 Humpy Fishing Bloopers and Blunders
I use my Kokanee nets for humpies. Long handles, heavy rubber net (so its easy on the fish we release, and hooks don't get stuck means we get back to fishing quickly.) and not too big or deep. Perfect! Though big buck teeth saw through the rubber pretty good, one of them will be getting a new rubber net before next koke season, and we managed to break the handle in half!racfish wrote:The blooper I enjoy are those who dont carry a net.
