Re: Holocost on the Skokomish!
I say take ALL of the money our state puts into salmon/steelhead research and enhancement, and pay the tribes as much or more than they make fishing in return for them leaving the rivers alone. Although they dont deserve it, the difference it would make would be outstanding. Only way I can see to stop the BS without violating the treaty

Its not the WDFW. This is a federal matter. The WDFW just manages the harvesting of fish. The feds in Wa DC make the rules. Don't blame Wa State.bugmasta wrote:WDFW is as useful as tits on a bull

Re: Holocost on the Skokomish!
Interesting idea and I kinda like it but they would just take the money and then go out an fish anyways. After they got arrested they would start a protest, refuse to eat while incarcerated, get the media to publicize it, then invite the media while they fish a river, snivel and whine about how down trodden they are and it's a cultural heritage for them to fish and to use gill nets because we all know they used gill nets to fish when they weren't chasing whales in canoes........ Next year, they'd be looking for the same money, sue the State when they didn't get it. Then win their case in court because they were expecting the money and need it to survive, secure the funding, invite the media and head out to the river, fish and leave more derelict nets in the river. And the cycle begins.......... Giving them anything is bad, we should have done as every other civilization has done since the beginning of time. Assimilate them into our society and make them live as we do.fishenfreak wrote:I say take ALL of the money our state puts into salmon/steelhead research and enhancement, and pay the tribes as much or more than they make fishing in return for them leaving the rivers alone. Its a great idea Danny but it didnt work when the casinos opened. One of the big arguments before Native casinos was to focus on the casino revenue and slow way down on the natural resources. Now they have casinos, tax free lives, fishing and hunting as well. Re: Holocost on the Skokomish!
I like the spin that the tribe is putting on the story. "In a topsy-turvy seafood market, wholesale prices of salmon and salmon eggs are causing tribal fishermen to cast away whole fish."
It's the market's fault, these fish are worthless. With a little bit of extra work, they could be selling organic compost. There is always a place to sell these fish. The tribe isn't getting paid by the hour, and many of the members don't have anything better to do than to look around for a buyer. Just because it's labor intensive, doesn't mean that they shouldn't sell the fish for 30 cents a pound to a fertilizer company or something. These fish aren't useless, they just don't want to put in the extra work needed. It's not just the Skokomish that do this though. We should get some pictures of the Nisqually, the confederated tribes up here on the Green dumping fish.

If anyone is trying to gather evidence to show to the WDFW.natetreat wrote: These fish aren't useless, they just don't want to put in the extra work needed. The Nisqually is one of my home rivers, I can provide solid evidence that that tribe does this same thing with there "Extra fish" I've seen it first hand and its sickening just the same. They dump coho, humpies, and chum all through the forest, egg the females.
I personally believe that the WDFW isn't gonna listen to what i have to say ( I've tried in the past) but some of you higher up's might have better chance and conections also with the media lately, ya never know.
Re: Holocost on the Skokomish!
I'm pretty certain the media is listening. This went from a facebook post to an on-air story, we're going to see more of it if we keep commenting and sending in photos. Okuma USA's facebook is linking to the story, it's gone national and viral already. Remember what public sentiment did for the octopus story a while back? Regardless of whether it was necessary or even good policy, public opinion changed public policy within the fisheries. If we address this with the same style and get non-fishermen to become aware of it, tribal-state practices will change. We now have new regulations prohibiting octopus fishing in marine sanctuaries and dive parks. I can see the headlines "An Epidemic of Waste Within our Tribal Fisheries". It's another example of the discrepancy between tribal regulations and tribal practices. Our hatcheries donate fish to the food banks and find uses for a lot of the spawned fish, why can't the tribe? As long as the discourse remains civil and avoids outright racism, the non-fishermen will continue to be appalled by the practice.
Re: Holocost on the Skokomish!
Sorry but the logic of the tribe/article is downright dumb in my opinion "there's so many fish we just had to kill and waste thousands of them". Damn those fish for surviving in such large numbers and returning to our rivers, apparently they got what they deserved according to this tribe. Who knew a healthy return was such a problem.....
Pathetic logic usually comes from trying to excuse the inexcusable.
Any thought given to letting these fish complete their life cycle and produce the next healthy return?
Personally I think the sportie limit is fine and shouldn't be raised and these fish shouldn't have been killed and dumped. Let them breed even if hatchery, nature will take it's course with the weak genes present in the "wild" populations from allowing hatchery fish to breed naturally. I know some will strongly disagree with this and have good reasons/knowledge to do so. Just my $.02 on a better management path than this killing and dumping. I find value in these fish far above their &*%*! "market value" and it pisses me off when someone argues they're just a commodity like this article/tribe seem to be doing here.

Re: Holocost on the Skokomish!
Y'all just dont read. WDFW has almost nothing to do with tribal fisheries. It is still a FEDERAL matter. If you want to fight these kinds of fish kills or just as bad is the stack of dead deer and elk in a pile that only the horns and organs are used. You need to complain to your senators and congress people. Native Americans fall under Federal laws not state laws. Give the WDFW a break. They can watch but have no real jurisdiction over the Natives. You need to call or contact Federal US Marshalls office.Or go picket the Federal Building. Thats where changes will be made. I dont like the fish kills either. Its a major waste. Native Americans arent the only wasters. Go up to Dutch Harbor someday and see the mountains of dead fish caught by WHITE fisherpeople. We close our eyes to them. We only focus on the Natives with hatred .In Dutch Harbor salmon that dont get sold are sold to Russians for fertilizer or China to make pet food.

Point proven. The fish are not wasted. They're SOLD. It doesn't matter who makes the rules regarding the tribes, any media exposure on this for a prolonged period of time will get things done.racfish wrote: We only focus on the Natives with hatred .In Dutch Harbor salmon that dont get sold are sold to Russians for fertilizer or China to make pet food.

I liked how kiro 7 pointed out that if a hatchery ran by the state would have done that.....it would have been illegal. Media usually tippy toes around negative issues involving natives.
Re: Holocost on the Skokomish!
Im surprised it even made the news, good job guys. In my area the local paper is so in bed with the indians pics like this never see the light of day

Agreed. I actually chuckled when she said that.goodtimesfishing wrote:I liked how kiro 7 pointed out that if a hatchery ran by the state would have done that.....it would have been illegal. Media usually tippy toes around negative issues involving natives.
The fish that got away, gains at least 2 lbs a day. It's science.

Re: Holocost on the Skokomish!
These are the same people who whacked a black tail deer to death with a paddle out of season while the deer was swimming defenselessly in the water. Absolute filth! Until the tribes become accountable for actions like this, it's going to continue to happen. All that happened from the deer incident was an apology from a member of the council if I recall correctly. Hopefully enough people become outraged enough by these sort of actions that the individuals and the tribes become accountable. Man, these things irritate the crap out of me!

This (fish) is the Skokomish Tribe and the deer was the Squaxin Tribe.fishindude wrote:These are the same people who whacked a black tail deer to death with a paddle out of season while the deer was swimming defenselessly in the water. Deer incident: http://nwsportsmanmag.com/editors-blog/ ... al-waters/
Peters says the matter has been turned over to law enforcement.
“We’re not taking this lightly,” he said.
Officials are trying to identify the people involved. Peters said that while the canoes appear to be Squaxin craft, their paddlers’ tribal memberships have yet to be fully confirmed.
Mike Cenci, the deputy chief of enforcement for the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife, says that a search warrant was served on the pickup of one of the individuals — the man who allegedly slit the buck’s throat — at the man’s residence in another county.
Deer remains were found in a tote in the vehicle, he said. The truck was also seized.
He stressed that that man was “not affiliated with the Squaxin Tribe,” and that he was “well outside” his tribe’s ceded area.
Anyway, there is no tribal or state deer hunting season in that area that is currently open, he said.
And just as Peters was, Cenci was disturbed by the cruel pursuit and killing of the exhausted animal out of its element.
“We have a close working relationship with the Squaxin police and tribe. They immediately recognized that this act would negatively detract from a very important cultural event, and have taken it seriously from the moment it occurred,” Cenci noted."

He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

Re: Holocost on the Skokomish!
Been to Dutch, Adak, Bristol Bay, St Petersburg, Kodiak, lots more the last few years.... I haven't seen these mountains of wasted fish you speak of. I assure you, mountains of fish are processed for use though, in spite of the massive amount of regulations.
I didn't post this info for us to fight or insult each other. I posted it for awareness of the problem, the massive amounts of wasted fish regardless of who does it. Since I don't fish rivers much at all, I had not seen or heard of this wasteful practice except of the sockeye on Lake Washington and a few individuals that don't follow the rules. Since posting it, I've heard that this happens in lots of rivers and other locations.
I posted the info in lots of places because I was in shock, because I want everyone to know, especially non-fishers, that this is occurring. What they do is up to them. Take photos and vid if you come across wasteful practices, get it to the media and fishing forums so those of us who are pissed can send it out to the masses.
Thanks

Re: Holocost on the Skokomish!
Im not fighting either Mark. There are two sides to a story. Im not condoning what the natives do.Its really sickening in fact. Fighting this on the state level is a waste of time. Going to the Native police is a waste as well. These pictures need to be shown at the Supreme Court. That's where change will come from.Thats where treaty rights are changed. Our state milk toasts politicians will do nothing .Send these gross fish photos to the US Marshalls office or to the Fed judges. Every year this topic comes up. Every year I hear all these do gooders are gonna fight it but in reality nothing happens or the fighters give up. This whole tribal freebie cr4p needs to stop. Or maybe ban Native Americans from using non tribal health clinics or shopping centers. Then retailers lose money and give in. Get some big money backers behind us and we'd have a chance at change.Without these kinds of backers nobody will care.
