I think the boat the hit them was being driven by an older man - who was changing a fuse at the time of the crash. I just have a hard time understanding how someone can be stupid enough to do something like that.

You can read The Oregonian story and find out the 75yr old "skipper" admitted he couldn't see over the dash while sitting down. His son in law also said he'd warned his FIL to pay attention and confirmed he had been using his cell phone on and off all morning. Sheer stupidity.

In Oregon, I used to fish Tillamook Bay a lot back in the 80's and 90's. I owned property down there for awhile. Going down, I used to take the Astroria Megler bridge and see the mess of combat fishing on the river. That whole Buoy 10 deal never looked attractive to me.

Maybe we should have a boat driver license. I know a guy back about 10 years ago in Oregon who was a friend of one of my friends who lives near St Helens OR. This guy bought a Seahawk just like mine. One morning he was going spring Chinook fishing and launched at a place called Scappose Bay on the Columbia. The launch is connected to the river by a narrow channel about 2 miles long. It was dark and raining and he was in a big hurry to get to a special spot. He ran down the channel in the dark using his mapping GPS. Problem is, the GPS didnt clearly show pilings. I know that channel real well, there are pilings everywhere, left over from when they used to have log rafts tied up to the pilings. There used to be a plywood mill there.

He hit a piling mostly head on, on the left side of the bow. He wasn't hurt but the guy with him went through the windshield and has been in a wheel chair ever since. I saw pics of the boat, it was a wreck. There was a lawsuit, I don't know the result. The boat driver wasnt a dummy, he was a retired high paid corporate guy who was also a officer in the Army reserve. That's why my friend knew him, they were both officers together in the Army back in the late 60's and 70's. Stuff happens.

Ouch. Boats are no different than cars - thousands of pounds of metal that can kill and maim if not used safely. The recent video is terrifying to watch. The article that comes with the video says the boat owner doesn't feel he should pay for much because no one was seriously hurt. Total lack of responsibility.

Maybe we shouldn't. A license won't fix stupid and if the guy you wrote about had one the outcome would have been the same.

Wow! That is just such a powerful video, and statement. The strong message IMHO is that we can never control those around us, or the environment around us.
Gotta always be prepared for the unthinkable.

We do and I'm pretty sure everyone has to have one now. They were implamented on a sliding age scale and I think they've pretty much caught up to everyone.

Oh that's right. I forgot about that since I am as old as dirt, grandfathered in and not quite dead yet. There are a few of us still around.

I'm not far behind and my fishing buddy got tagged last summer. I went through the process when it was announced, just so I didn't miss it. You might want to check, it's an online course that takes about 4 hours to go through then the online test. I opted to just do the test as it was all fresh from another course. If you're up on the rules of the road and the other topics, just take the test and roll. Your insurance Co. will be happy too.

I dunno, didn't consider the boating education card a license in the traditional sense, but certainly better than nothing for those who care as an operator. It's a one time deal, no renewal required unlike land bound driver license.

Didn't take the test, the state accepted my USCG Boating Skills and Seamanship completion certificate as having satisfied boater safety standards and a copy of that plus $10 is all it took for them to issue my card.

Missed the cutoff by "this much" and my wife laughed at me because she didn't have to comply. [razz]

Thats funny, I had the exact same thought.
