Boat #s
So I just registered my 10' john boat today and got the decals that say Washington June 2009. Is that all I need to affix to a boat this size or do I need to put the registration #s on there as well? If I do need them, where can I get the reg #s?
RE:Boat #s
Yeah, you need to put the registration no# on too. You can get the letters and numbers like at Home Depot,Lowes and etc....

Size of boat and motor is how you know if you need it registered. Since you already got it done anyways you can get the numbers anywhere. They are just stickers.

yep, you can pick up the numbers pretty much anywhere. You can also go online and have some made for you. I did that before my current boat. It's one big stencil, that way you can just put them on all at once without having to do them one by one and get them misaligned. You can make them any font and color. They also come in camoflauge!

Since urbanangler is doing this to be legal, then he best use the correct font which is block letters only.Mossy wrote:You can make them any font and color.
From the Washington Boating Safety Education course, Chapter 4,
The registration number and registration decals must be displayed as follows.
Number must be painted, applied as a decal, or otherwise affixed to both sides of the bow.
Number must read from left to right on both sides of the bow.
Number must be in at least three-inch-high, bold, vertical BLOCK characters.
Number’s color must contrast sharply with its background.
Letters must be separated from the numbers by a space or hyphen]
Since you now have a registered boat, you must pay every year to maintain the registration. Also, you are required by law to have your registration on board any time you operate your "vessel".
But, this is way overkill on a 10' jon boat anyway. Personally, I wouldn't have bothered with registering, as it opens too many doors for potential citations. For boats under 16', less than 10hp, and not on any federal waterways it is totally unnecessary.

hewes is right, need to be block letters. On my last boat I ordered some because the company said it meets federal requirements, I didn't check into state. Now that I've done the research, wa state has the same rules as federal. I ordered the standard block letters but in a different color which has to be a contrast from the boat. So like I was saying before, you can order them pretty much anywhere online, since they are a decal they are easier to put on and already spaced.
I also think I wouldn't have bothered getting it registered.

My neighbor across the street put some snazzy letters with a blockish shape on his tournament boat. He made it exactly one day before they cited him for illegible registration letters.
Make sure to get good sized blocks, the PoPo tend to be sticky about this lately.

I picked up my letters at Ace... cost me a 1.30 a piece. Then today when I was on the water I realized that the letters would be submerged with 2 people aboard... but I put them where required - there is not space for them anywhere else. I registered it bc I like to fish lake WA.
RE:Boat #s
I think you should be good, if I remember right I read that the numbers need to be above water line if "practical".
