Do you have any fishing superstitions?

Post by bigastrout » Wed May 09, 2007 12:49 am

Here are some of mine

1. never take the stringer out of your tackle box until its needed or the bite will turn off

2. dont pick up the net untill needed

3. sometimes when river fishing someone has to slip and get one foot wet before the fishing will get good

4. bananas are not to be brought on the boat, Bad Luck

I have developed one. I always wear a fishing t-shirt, and now it's getting worse, I have to "match the hatch". If bass fishing, a bass t-shirt, salmon- salmon t-shirt. Silly but if I don't wear the t-shirt I do feel uncomfortable about it.

If you forget to bring the net you are guaranteed to catch a big fish.

I was a victum of this, but it was a good thing. The first time I caught a trout over 5# a friend and I were fishing from a small aluminum boat. And had never caught a fish even close to that size so we were excited to say the least. Trying to boat a fish that big at that level of excitement with out a net is next to imposible. We almost swamped that boat. It must have been hilarious to watch from shore.

People have superstitions so they can blame it on something when I get skunked...

Thats why I have no superstitions...

I have certain things I always eat out on the boat, but not cause I'm superstitious about them, I just love the peanut-butter and honey sandwich with a diet coke combo...Great combo in my boook

I have 2. The first one is never hold your pole when your in the boat, no matter how many bite you lose cuz as soon as you pick up the pole the bite turns off. The 2nd is at Mar Don resort they sell fish lighters at the store with just about every spiecies on the lighters that they have at the lake. During the summer I buy a crappie one or a walleye one. Last month I went there and picked up a trout lighter cuz thats what we were fishing for and I caught a 21.5" trout from potholes res. and a 16" from the hamptons my 2 buddys the non lighter buyers got skunked so Im never not going to buy a lighter with a fish on it I dont care if its a bullhead lighter. I HATE GETTING SKUNKED. LOL

I always try to think about non-fishing things when fishing. It seems like if I'm thinking about fish, fishing, or getting a bite, the bite never comes.

This only applies to one lake of mine, but I never use worms if I have seen a bass caught that day.

I agree entirely about the hat - I have one hat that I wear ANYTIME I go fishing and the only time I wear it, and it is always in the rig with my gear.

It is the first thing I pick up once I am at my point of off-load, and the last thing I take off loading up to leave.

Everytime that I have worn it I had a good day fishing - THE ONE TIME I DIDN'T TAKE IT I GOT SKUNKED while my friend pulled in fish after fish - on my own boat to boot. Talk about adding salt to the wound.

NEVER GO FISHING WITHOUT YOUR LUCKY HAT...

I have a lucky hat but I dont consider it part of my superstition. One thing I have to make sure of is that my tackle box smells like the wrost rotten fish in the world. I guess you could say thats my superstition

After reading the other posts on this thread I realize I have more than I thought. I have to add Lucky Hat and Lucky Shirt to my list.

1) A fish on the first cast...never a good thing.

2) Losing your first fish...an even worse thing.

3) Wind from the north or the east...it's gonna be a long, tough day.

4) No wind at all is the worst possible scenario.....give me rain instead!

5) Forgetting my Skoal. I'm fishless without. The nearest convenience store is about to get my business!

mine would be if you don't have a net you'll catch a big fish, this happened last year on a pond that i was fishing for crappie with a 1" twister grub jig. caught a big catfish that was easily over 30" got it up to my waist and tried to hand grab it when it took off straightening out the hook. found a nice net that i can have on me but haven't caught anything big when i do have it. the next one is that lucky hat. i've been trying to make one,LOL. i have 5 hats that are in the running, the luckier ones get more stuff added such as fish pins lucky lures or flies, they seem to be like the lucky shirt, one hat does better for trout, another for panfish, yet another while in a boat, what ever seems to work i say,LOL. <')//<

Yep, I have that one too. It seems like when I concentrate really hard, I won't get a bite. However, as soon as my mind drifts to something else, fish on. Or, whenever I set my pole down and grab something to eat/ drink, etc, it seems that the fish picks that time to strike my line.

Also, this is more paranoia than superstition, but once I find a bait that works really well for a particular species, I stock up on that bait in large quantities, so that I have enough for tons of trips, and don't have to worry about running out for many trips to come.

I have to unintentionally forget something so that i dont spend the whole time worrying about what i forgot. I can't do it intentionally because then i am just mad at myself. This has led to me trying new techniques with positive and negative results. I also have my vest.

I always wear my lucky fishing shirt. Whenever someone calls my cell phone I get a bite.
