Problems for the salmon fisheries

Post by MikeFishes » Fri May 02, 2008 8:34 am

No doubt you guys have heard the news about Oregon and California closing the salmon fisheries for this year. Well, the National Marine Fisheries Service has declared the West Coast salmon fisheries a failure, which could mean disaster assistance to local communities who depend on the fisheries.

Link

Let's hope that the salmon can make a comeback.

Salmon are not an endless resorce. We are taking more, (comercial, tribes, sport) than can be reproduced. The Govt can and will control the comercial and sport fisheries, but you can believe that the nets will be out. Why, because they can. I grew thinking that Native Americans were conservationists. Take only what you need. Well I am waiting to see how dumb I was growing up.

Yes, KUP i've heard of the CCA....

Nets need to be banned. The WDFW doesn't need to be in charge of our salmon stocks. Sporties share the blame, commercials do to, so does everyone. Our rapid industrialization and insensitivity to rivers has also had it's effect on the very sensitive spawning grounds (rivers)...

Good article Mikey

They should not allow any netting for 2 to 6 years on all bodies of water even the tribes. They ruined the steelhead run on the skykomish river last winter by netting in the snohomish
If it looks fishy, Then fish it, If it dont look fishy, fish it anyways. <')}}}}><

But what do you do about sportfishers? Commercials/Indians would cry foul if they were restricted on their practices and us sporties could still have our season? I agree netting places a bigger dent in our fisheries, but sportfishers need to be willing to take a hit on their self interest as well and be willing to give up their seasons too...
