catching and eating carp!!!!

The silver lake off I-5, the one with the resort right on the water that you can fish from your patio. Iv never been there but the link was on this site, looks like a great little rsort, but anyway on the web page it said they had "edible carp" in the lake. I dont know what this means, if there is a carp that taste better or if its there way of "sugar coating" the fact that these ugly beasts are in this water

I've tried eating carp fixed several different ways and from different types ow water but found them rather bland. At least you can smoke shad and it'll tast good. I've done the bow and arrow shoot for carp a lot of times. A lot of fun and it rids the lake of a few bottom destroyers. We always put them to good use by cutting them into chunks and using them for garden fertilizer.

two weeks ago i stopped into that silver lake resort and asked how the fishing was. the gal behind the counter commented that there was some nice big carp around the dock. maybe they were hopeing someone would help to get rid of some of them!!!??? <')//<

This is an older post but I caught a 9lbs carp once on a 4lbs line and I found it really fun. This last weekend there was a lot of people with bows for a tournament here on the snake. If anyone has any good bait ideas I'd like to catch one again. After I told my brother who's married to an Iraqi girl that I caught one she gave me one of the recipes they used back in Iraq (carp are very popular there) and I want to try it out. My buddy from the Congo also wants me to catch one really bad but they never bite our line the one I got was on accident (my jig hook went through it's back fin and I dragged his butt in lol).

I don't have a spear or bow but would like to catch some of these.. so please any suggestions would be great.

Go to Green Lake any you'll be surrounded with plenty of people who enjoy carp....

Fishing for carp in Green Lake (King) is a ton of fun. It is loaded with them, and has some large ones too. I have done it dozens of times and usually catch a couple. The docks by the bleachers is a good spot to try. I would not recommend light gear, or you will loose fish.

Canned corn works very well as bait. You can just stick 4-6 kernels on a medium sided hook. Or better yet, try a hair rig, that’s what I used. If you are handy, they are not too hard to make.

Carp are really bad in the Madison area of wisconsin.. They are a junk fish and in some places they would put Barrels out for people to throw them in . Which would be picked up every few days .. Was a Great Idea I thought.. The smell was not something to be relished though lol... They can grow to be huge though and alot of fun to catch.. Take your Kid carp fishing just for the fun of it it will really put a smile on their faces ,hooking into a big fish like that.. I know wading for the gills was always a trip because the carp came in around the same time and would smack into your legs. Sometimes they left bruise because they hit so hard....
I would wade a big bay that was just shallow enough for it. I hooked into a 50lber on 4lb test line.. Took me over 2 hrs to land this fish..Which meant I was also all over the bay as well following it so as not to snap my line.. Was alot of fun to catch and quite a challange as well.. Of course after I had to good respool my reel since my line was all stretched out.. But still it was a good time..
Corn was a great bait to use if you just wanted to catch carp. But they will hit anything in the spring when they are agressive... Really wished I had a pic of that fish just because it is hard to imagine catch a fish that size on 4lb test line ....

In jolly ol' england sportfisher's refer to carp as "King" and they are normally caught and released for sport. In fact this is one of the primary manifestations of sportfishing in that island kingdom. They are also a sought after sport fish in japan.

But I think this is simply the kind of thing that can happen when there are no bass or panfish or trout or catfish to fish for.


We should pitty these poor, pathetic sportfishers even as we do everything in our power to make sure we don't have to share their plight.

I agree with the general consensus that we should not waste any fish we catch. We should retain for consumption or release (in a healthy state) any fish except for carp.

I've tried lots of different ways to cook this stuff but the meat is orange, bony, oily, and disgusting. There is nothing you can do with it. I've even tried "polishing" them. Polishing is where you keep them alive, but withdraw them from food and keep them in fresh clean water for a couple of days. This really helps the flavor of fish like catfish and tilapia that you have caught out of dirty, dingy ponds and lakes.


Many, many years ago I can recall accidentally snagging a couple of 10 pound class carp and bringing them home to see if they would work for garden fertilizer. My wife saw them and offered them to some neighbors (who were asian) she knew very well. They thanked me for them a couple of weeks later and said they were very good. I still think they were just trying to be polite.

But, if after all this encouragement you still want to go catch carp here's the best plan. Set your truck up with a livewell. Catch them so they come in alive (e.g. this negates the bowfishing methodologies). Take them alive to the closest asian fish market that has "live fresh water tanks"... last I checked they were happy to pay about 50 cents a pound. Fresh, bled, and iced the most you're going to get is about 25 cents a pound.

There's an operation in eastern Washington called "The Snake River Carp Company" or something like that. They harvest these things (or used to.. my info is about 5 years old) and use them for various and asundry purposes including wholesaling them to asian fish markets.

I doubt it was to eat them. THey would make great fertilizer which is what one company in Australia does to them. The company is called Charlie Carp Fertilizer. Like the cane toad, the carp are really overpopulated down there and viewed as a ecological threat.

I had a friend who would actually keep the carp and stock his tiny lil man-made pond with them...come spring he would go catch one of two and use them for fertilizer...not sure how he converted them to plant food like if he just buried them or what.......

I have caught many large carp in the seeps lakes and potholes dunes on whole night crawlers on the bottom. I have never tried them though, so I don't know how they taste.

the thing about carp is that when you clean them you have to cut off the dark meat that lies near the skin, this is very strong tasting. i haven't had smoke carp in a long time but i did enjoyed eating it that way. you just need to know that it isn't salmon. its all in how its smoked , i've had smoked salmon that was way to salty but i've also have had it where i could'nt get enough, same would be true with carp or any other fish. have yet to hear much about some recipies for this fish maybe you CNR bass guys should get together and find some good ones for use bass eaters, would help get rid ofsome carp and leave more bass for you! maybe i'll get some and experament and let you all know. <')//<

Clean it all up,cut off the head, take a cedar grillling plank you can find them at Wal-Mart or you back yard.Take a 5th of whiskey I perfer OLD#7 Jack Daniels.Pour enough whiskey in a bowl just enough to cover the carp and the cedarplak let soak for 30 minutes to a hour.Now take the carp and plank out of the bowl.Now the most important part,throw that fish in the garbage and eat the cedar plank it far more tasty than that nasty carp and enjoy the left over J.D.:chef:

The grass carp in Silver Lake (Cowlitz) are not there to be caught or eaten, regardless of what that resort description says. They were introduced to that lake about 15 years ago for milfoil control. They weren't cheap either. They put 83,000 of them in there. They are all Triploid (sterile) and quite a few of the initial amount died off once the plants got under control. There may be a few common carp in the lake, but be sure to leave the grass carp alone.

At the risk of being laughed at.. I would like it but only if other people here fish for carp so I could get pointers. I'll fish for anything and carp have been fun so far.

Everytime I go fishing there is usually a carp on the shore. I hate it at Boyer Park because they just sit there and rot.. and eeew. But by Wawawai I don't mind because there are muskrats, coyotes and raccoons there and they clean the banks so the fish are cleaned up nicely.

I was not able to get any today it seems that since the tournament that they cleaned out the carp really well in my usual fishing spot. I am thinking of driving down to Boyer Park on sunday because the last time I was there I could see about 30 of them fluttering about.
