Rod preference

Which do you prefer for your different kinds of fishing? Im not talking brands, im talking the stiffness of a rod. Do you prefer it to be more stiff or flimsy?

I prefer a flimsy rod for fish such as trout and other small fish but for bass I use a stiffer more durable rod

The rod type i prefer depends on what im casting. I use a very heavy, stiff rod for throwing big swimbaits. I also have a lighter wippy for throwing topwaters and worms, almost everything else. I have a 10 ft medium stiffness rod for steelheading. And a ultralight for lures for trout. And a 8ft medium light for bait for trout.

i love ultra light and light rods i use them for everything bass trout panfish and even salmon sometimes. i once hooked a nice silver on my light rod but i only had 8 lb line and he broke me off :(

I love ultralight spinning rigs! They are extremely versatile and I've caught more fish with them than any other type of setup. Most people probably don't realize the size of fish an ultralight can handle. When I was a teenager me and a buddy used to walk the shoreline at Tablerock lake with a couple of ultralights, a few cards of white 1/16 oz jigs, and an extra spool of 6 lb mono. We caught a shload of crappie and quite a few bass. The biggest LMB I ever caught on an ultralight was a little over 4 lbs. We even hooked an occasional catfish! Those were the days...

A 6'6" Medium action rod will do about everything you need it to around here...Perch, trout, bass, heck, even salmon if you have a nice drag and play the fish nicely...

Of course everyone's preferences and the type of fish and gear used will dictate what sorts of rods people have.

I have fished for over 50 years and now I like to lay back and enjoy the fight. I am not out for meat, just fun. I use a 10.5' Lamaglass ultra-light noodle rod and a 5.5' Fenwick ultra light most of the time. When I am fly fishin" I use a 3 to 5 wt and have fun. If I was to go out to Lake Washington to fish for Cutts then would change to a little stiffer rod for trolling. The same for Rufus. It is amazing that a Noodle rod can be used to catch fish in the 10lb class as long as you aren't trolling to fast or deep. Great for stream fishing though.If you cast out and retrieve it works real well. I have a collection of over 75 rods now and the old ones are fun to use. If I was to have just one rod, I think it would be 6-6 to 7' medium with a fast tip. I would use a spinning real with 6lb test. I think this set-up would work for just about anything . The only change would be going to a different reel like a penn 109 for salmon fishing using 12lbtest. This would work great for Cutts and large rainbows. I know the new reels and poles are great but nothing like the older stuff for fun. Have fun this summer and if you see an old guy in an aluminium sears boat, stop by....it might be me. For bass, I prefer fast to x-fast action with medium to medium heavy using plastics, spinnerbaits and jigs. For Cranking I use a moderate action with medium.

I use my ultra light as much as I can. But you really cant cast too far (unless you stack the weight on, but too much weight will snap your pole in half) and they are not the best for setting the hook.

6' 6" - 7' med action rods are what I use for pretty much everything.

I never go with heavy action rods. I have maybe 3 and only use them about 1 time a year, and that is for trolling with leaded line. 99% of the time I troll leaded line or a 6oz banana, I just use a longer medium action rod.

Fly rods are fun for jigging panfish or trolling light lures for trout. Ice fishing rods are good for a challenge. I dont use either of the last 2 methods very often.

I have a couple of emmrods or ones like them ....They were made 40years ago or so and I have never used one...I'll have to give them a try.

For fly fishing, if I had my choice, I would use a fast action rod. Like a 9 foot, 4 piece, 5 weight Z-Axis from Sage. But, at $675 a pop, I'll never have one in my quiver. So I like to build my own.
